I know that tablet was discontinued, but if I got one off of Ebay, would a carrier activate it with their sim card? I talked to Verizon and they told me they would not activate it and they would only activate the ones they have listed on their page? So is there any carrier that would activate a playbook these days?

If it's a GSM LTE PlayBook (REG51LW), you should have no problem with any GSM carrier. CDMA carriers (Verizon, Sprint) won't work too well with it.

However, if it's a Verizon PlayBook (REF31LW), that never officially existed, so it'd be exceedingly difficult to get Verizon to activate it.

Can't he just say he bought an iPad and get a data only SIM?

I'm not sure how the PlayBook works I never had one.
