I would like to give the Blackberry 972o to my mother. She doesn't need fancy apps, just watts app, and reading her hotmail, etc. She lives in South America, so I would like to know if you can make free calls with the BBM version for 9720 (i believe it runs on OS7.1)? I myself have the Z10. This way we can talk for free via BBM.

    Thanks,
    Pieter

Older devices need BIS for BlackBerry services (like BBM).

Yes, as long as both your BBM have voice (which it should) then it's free to talk as long as you're both on wifi. You can make sure calls are only over wifi and not using mobile data in settings. Unless you have lots of data and don't care about that.
I talk to family and friends in Africa all the time.
