Why can't my flash default to "on" status? It's off and every time I take a piece I have to manually turn it on.
Thanks for any assistance

Leave it on auto?
that goes off when it's needed......
No, it is somehow defaulted to off. I can out it on auto before I take a pig but I can't change it to just stay on auto.

I want to leave it on auto but it won't stay. It keeps reverting to off.

Same here on passport 10.3.1
No issues with mine. Maybe try an Official OS? Or possibly try a shut down restart?
All works perfectly on my Q5.

The flash setting (auto/on/off) persists correctly for me with OS version 10.3.2.2339, and was never an issue on previous versions either.
I would recommend a soft reset (either hold down the Power/Lock button for ten seconds, or both the volume up and down buttons for the same length of time) until the phone restarts and see if the issue continues to occur. If so, there may be a corrupt setting that is causing this in which case I would recommend either a security wipe or a device software reload.
Since both of the above options will erase the data from your device, create a backup using BlackBerry Link first but don't restore it right away - test the camera after you've completed the initial setup wizard to see if you still encounter this behavior, and if not then try restoring your backup. If the issue returns then there is an issue with the settings being corrupted and you will unfortunately need to reconfigure device from a fresh slate (re-add your accounts, etc.)
