You are trying to use a photograph that you took with your phone for your display pic? Is that correct? You don't need to crop it. you can crop it after you choose it by moving it around.

I think the trouble the OP might be referring to is that on the z30 (not sure if this is a general blackberry 10 thing since I've only ever had a z30 :P) you have to crop your bbm display pic to square dimensions to use it, versus the original picture dimensions which tend to be rectangular, cutting off a lot of the actual pic.

I know the display picture is supposed to be square but on legacy devices you could get past this by just zooming out until the entire original picture fitted into the selection square area.

While I can't tell you why this is so, I can tell you about a way to work around this.

If you need to use the full picture instead of a cropped version, you can use an app to add padding to an image to make it square. I use effectica.

Yep.. another tone of those questionmark decisions..

Pre bb10... display pics didn't have to be square
It may even still be like this on os7.1
