On order to make money you need to spend money. BlackBerry never had to do that, and now that they need to, they seem hesitant.

Right now, there isn't any funding available for marketing to mature-market consumers, so the "how" doesn't matter much.

BB is focusing on selling to regulated enterprises and to emerging market consumers (their two strongest markets), and that's where their marketing dollars and efforts will go. BB must make these areas profitable before it can even consider another shot at the mature-market consumer again, because ANY effort is going to require spending a ton of money or it won't go anywhere.

Even if you had many major sports figures publicly using a BB phone, most customers will go to their carrier's store, where they aren't stocking (or in some cases, even carrying at all) BB phones, and they'd buy something else anyway. Before BB can sell to consumers, it will have to repair its relationship with the carriers, and that's going to involve a significant spend on co-funded advertising, among other things. The carriers aren't going to buy and stock phones for a competing ecosystem if the manufacturer isn't going to advertise that phone and ecosystem. They've done that with BB10 once already, and lost a bunch of money, so they will need assurances that BB can afford a real, sustained marketing campaign.

That will involve: new in-store displays (and paying the carriers for premium space), training for sales reps, newspaper, magazine, and TV ads, promotional give-aways, on-line ads, social media campaigns, etc.

And, of course, BB will need some NEW devices to sell; it's not like they can market year+ old devices that have already failed in the marketplace. That's why they've limited their current markets, and are making devices targeted at those specific markets.

If we see any push for consumer sales, I wouldn't expect that until 2016 at the earliest. And that's really going to rely on the Z3 and the "Classic" being big successes in their respective markets.

I would say actually having the devices live in a store so customers don't have to special order!

BlackBerry needs to make smartphones that sell by themselves... forget the retailers, most sell what's easiest devices to sell anyway !!

BlackBerry should be sending all sorts of upgrade promotions out via email to all those still using pre-OS10 devices !! Can't believe this hasn't been done yet !!

Which would make no sense whatsoever, since the Target breach had nothing at all to do with smartphones of any brand/OS.

One could imply without naming the person and or company. Its just a scenario played to something that just happened recently.

Show people dropping them, with looks of horror on their face?

Carrying them around in prams and baby holders?

Holding an eight inch tablets to their ears?

Autocorrect messenging errors from pure touch devices, saying rude and incomprehesible things to your collegues?

Holding the device like fine china in the hand, and even weirder because of the low bevel trend?

Oh no, wait, thats the best way to ridicule smart phones.

A good way to market blackberry phones would be just to make more good phones. Something dual camera gesture driven like the xbox, and non-touch screen might be cool. Throw the glass to the curb and make something hardy. Something with ipod shuffle type features, some audio chips for music enhancement, a good camera, with built in social sharing options (share button?) could be cool too, especially if it tangos well with a ipad, android tablet, or the new playbook (miracast onto the other device, share calling, texting, gps, drive sharing etc)

Anyway, I don't think ads and such are that important. product placement in tv shows seems to be a good way to go. As pirating goes up, and recording, tv shows are more and more reliant on outside funding. Theres some blackberries in the show "orphan black", and they look pretty cool the way they are used on the show.

Tweak this commercial my Mercedes and BlackBerry to feature not just remember but the hub, os stability, and security. BlackBerry shouldn't have to spend that much more to modify it.

TV spots - no Super Bowl fiascos though
Morning / late afternoon radio - captive audience during commutes, sponsor traffic reports in major business hubs (people pay attention to weather and traffic!)
Metro print ads - subways, underground
Sponsor sport events - mass sport events such as baseball world series, word cup ( car racing?!? Nah... March Madness??? WIN!)
