At this point, BlackBerry is focusing on "what's next" for the company. No need to play follow-the-leader.

But they didn't miss just one opportunity, there have been YEARS of opportunities that have passed BlackBerry by.


There are are several answers to your question Stupidity, Complacency and Arrogance - I think all played a role in many of the decisions that were made by management over the last few years.

Ignored iPhones release
Ignored Androids release
Ignored the importance of Apps
Ignored the need for a new and faster OS for too long
Ignored the need to utilize their current user base when designing their new platform
Ignored the need for more experienced and talented (and faster) software engineers
Ignored the need for "fresh blood" with different ideas in management
Ignored the failures of the PlayBook and repeated many of them with BB10 two years later
Ignored the importance of Apps
Ignored the problems that MS was having and how they were dealing with them in launching their platform (cheap devices, paying for apps)
Ignored the fact that enterprise and consumers have different needs and different price points
Ignored the fact that other cheaper and even more versatile MDM Systems were coming to market


If someone else has a nicer way of putting it... that's fine.

Stupidity - behavior that shows a lack of good sense or judgment.
Complacency - self-satisfaction especially when accompanied by unawareness of actual dangers or deficiencies
Arrogance - an attitude of superiority manifested in an overbearing manner or in presumptuous claims or assumptions
