What's your point? A smartphone's camera has been the single most important selling-point for the last several years - no other feature is considered to be as important. So why wouldn't they focus people's attention to the fact that they put excellent cameras in their phones? If you're going to sell a flagship-level phone at flagship prices, an excellent camera is required (but not always delivered!).

Camera has been focus on a lot of reviews, comparing flagship to flagship... just saying.

That's my point - if BlackBerry wanted to play in the $800 phone game, they needed a contending camera but they never seemed to have grasped this.

There are a lot of things BB never seemed to have grasped. This is just one.

Yup. A camera alone wouldn't have done anything different.

Note their heavy emphasis on spending significant amounts of money on marketing, adverting and promotional activities.

It's going to sell itself regardless of the camera. Especially without a Samsung competitor.

The Note 7 may not be for sale anymore, but the S7 and S7 Edge still are.

Not surprising since phones are pretty much the same anymore anyway. Camera is the biggest differentiating factor among slabs of plastic and glass. Unlike a raft of other features that not everyone uses, very few people DON'T use the camera.

Remember when the Lumia 1020 with the 41 MP camera came out? Didn't seem to gain much traction for Windows Phone.

The physical compromises, necessary to give that kind of imaging, made the phone fugly to mainstream consumers... who probably went ahead and bought the 920 with it's merely excellent camera... and did help WinPhone gain some traction.

The 1020 was always a niche within a niche, a Windows Phone (niche 1) for people who valued the camera over everything else (niche 2); and isn't really (IMO) the phone to prove the point with.

It depends on who you're selling the phone to. However, the Pixel has extreme issues with Lens Flares and Halos, and the camera is only decent if you use Google's camera app with HDR+ Auto or On. Without it, the pictures are mediocre at best. The Video Stabilization is very jerky, and the sound recording isn't all that great.

The hardware is not really "flagship." The marketing works because the videos are decently produced and it's a "Google Phone." It's a reputable brand, and that's pretty much all a smartphone needs these days to be moderately successful.

The tech press does most of the marketing for Google, Apple, and other reputable brands. They (and Google/Apple/Android/iOS' fanbase) tear down the competition and go out of their way to make their preferred brands look like the second coming. People are going to see these things pop up on their news feeds, etc. far more than some Google Pixel video ads. When friends ask on Facebook what phone they should get, the camera is almost never a reason people recommend Android or iOS. It's always things like "works great with your Google Account," "iMessage," or the fact that it's a reputable brand producing the device (Samsung, Google, Apple, etc.).
