"Study the competition. Hate the competition. Recall 100 years of know-how. Borrow from the best. Start from scratch. Polish it. Punish it. Don't forget the calendars. If you want to make a car the Dodge way, it's easy. Just follow the steps."

The commercial is gutsy, recalls the history of the product (implying a firm foundation), yet says it's been rebuilt from scratch, borrowing from the competition and making improvements.

Whilst its true that the advert is gutsy, its not what Blackberry should be doing. Their adverts should show what differentiates their mobiles from others. Consumers only want to know that, not the history behind Blackberry. A Car commercial has a different rhythmn; in this case its a 'gutsy' commercial, fast paced, covering all grounds, indicating pedigree whilst highlighting its contemporary aspects. It fits with the vehicle and the type of vehicle its trying to sell.

Blackberry on the other hand has previously tried the 'pedigree' commercials, which fall flat only because their pedigree is irrelevant in the fast paced mobile technology market. If anything, it counts against them by referring overmuch to it, making it seem behind the times when mobile technology is all about the 'latest thing'.

Samsung and Apple commercials are very similar; they say what their devices can do by demonstrating new and cool features in action and where they are useful. This creates interest through curiosity. Blackberry are unable to do this with their devices, because frankly they don't have a 'wow factor'. They need to work on new features and attention grabbing ones in particular before they review their advertising campaign.
