What all is covered on the one year warranty through att and what is and isn't covered on the extended apple care?

AT&T doesnt warranty the iPhone. Apples does.

It's software defect only. Hardware damamge is not covered. Applecare just extends the initial warranty. Skip it.

Yes it is the same and Apple care is a good idea if you plan to keep it past one year. You can add Apple care until the day your original warranty expires
