The operators refused to sell the "iPhone" in Russia

Big Three operators - MTS, "MegaFon" and "VimpelCom" (Beeline) - did not renew distribution agreements with Apple sales in Russia smartphones iPhone. The refusal is dictated by low demand, which, in particular, due to the requirement of American companies to sell "iPhone" at the level of 30 thousand rubles(aprox. $1000), as well as the influence of the "gray" importers offering the same product at a low cost.

Apple stuck to the scheme of sales of its products to Russia via the mobile operators since 2008, when it allowed MTS "MegaFon" and "VimpelCom" bring iPhone in the country to sell in salons and ship to other dealers. Under the terms of the agreement, each of the three had to buy out of 1-1.5 million units in two years.

This variant of partnership, however, proved costly for operators: they could not realize is the number of "iPhones" because of low demand. Apple proposed scheme did not work for the big three, and last week the last refused to cooperate, "VimpelCom", before concluding this distribution agreement with Samsung.

According to the newspaper "Vedomosti" citing informed sources as a result of Apple decided to negotiate with retailers on the direct supply of "iPhones". So far, it has only a contract with "The Messenger", concluded last fall. The talks, which the company conducts with other networks, are preliminary in nature. According to one of the companion publication, direct shipments of smartphones in Russia could begin in the fall.

USA carriers will be next to tell apple to **** off. A Lot of carriers got screwed with unsold units. If apple thinks that they don't need change, it could be a nice opening for bbry.

I agree. It seems the Apple has a worm, slowly eating from the inside out. Sometimes coming to the surface, such as this story.

History suggests carriers turning away from the iPhone turn toward Android, not BBRY or WP7/8 (China being a notable exception, but in the WP column). I see what you're getting at, but you're jumping the gun just a tad. Keep these numbers in mind:

    • 6.9 million - BBRY worldwide sales during it's most recent quarter
    • 8 million - iPhone sales/activations. . .on just AT&T and Verizon during the first quarter of this year

As long as Apple can sell more phones at two U.S. carriers than BBRY sells devices worldwide, Apple is the least of BBRY's concerns.

I just checked and no, they don't offer any BB10. Which is odd. They have offered legacy devices. WP very popular over there .

Government requires that iPhone be sold at an artificially inflated rate.... TAX.

You can buy one on the Blackmarket for hundreds less, so is there any wonder that carriers are left holding stock they cant sell????

Not sure if the TAX applies to a Canadian company or not... But this is more a reflection of the Russian system and not on Apple or it devices.

Thank you for the display of common sense.
It's a reasonable bet there are FAR MORE black market iPhones in use within the Federation than there are BB10 devices being used in the United States.

Some of this nonsense the fanboys pin their hopes and dreams to is downright laughable. It's no wonder you guys bring the trolls.

Regardless of black market, horrendous requirements of quotas from Apple are well known. O2 in Czech Republic is also not selling iPhones since iPhone 5 launch, due to high quotas.

There is a big difference in a carriers not being able to afford to meet Apple's "demands". And Users not buying the iPhone.

Apple is being SMART in how they deal with retailers. The are protecting their devic and making sure that they have the control needed to provide users with the best overall experience and making sure that the carrier has an incentive to market and sell their devises.

Look at BB10... us Verizon users are still waiting on an update to 10.1! Why, because the carrier has all of the power, and no incentive to push out that update. Based on update cycles for most of their Android Devices.... I bet there will be a number of update cycles that Verizon BB10 users miss out on (unless they do leaks). There will even come a time when Verizon might end support for the Z10, long before BB stops pushing out updates.

You do have a point here. Apple talking from position of power, when BB doesn't have that option here in USA. May be one day, but not now....

You do know apple recently opened its online apple store in Russia, and will open several new retail locations within Russia this year.

This seems to mirror apples entrance into the Chinese market, we all know how well that turned out for apple.

Ah. So if a company says "do X to carry our product," that's strong-arming?
