new computer cant sync with itunes

just got a new computer (windows 7. used to have xp) downloaded Itunes and when I hooked up my iphone 3gs it wont recognize it. i authorized the computer but no luck.
I called awful support and they wanted to charge me to fix their problem ???
wtf.
any suggestions from the lords of iphone ?

Uninstall the Apple mobile device driver in device manager.

Go to device manager right click apple mobile device and uninstall reboot and plug phone back in.
