- Okay, here we go!
I was an iPhone user way back when it was launched and I remember the whole "jailbreaking" jazz, and unlocking ziphone stuff. However after about 6 months I ended up dumping the iPhone for Blackberry.
So today, my wife and I are at the mall and we cruise into an Apple store to check out whats new and she catches a glimpse of the iPhone 3G. In the past she never gave a rats **** about the iPhone but for some reason, today it really grabbed her attention. After about 30 minutes of her fiddling with it we leave. On the car ride back home, she says "Honey, I want an iPhone". I immediately slam on the breaks and tell her to get out and I speed off laughing hysterically as I tongue kiss my Blackberry Storm. Lol.
Actually, what really happened was I told her that we have been with T-Mobile for years and we just recently renewed our contracts. I then throw out the idea of maybe getting an unlocked one for T-Mobile. She immediately got excited and asked that I look into it for her.
So here I am, asking you iPhone 3G users for the scoop. I have read that jailbreaking isnt really much needed anymore since the release of the Apple Application Store (something that wasnt around when I had my iPhone 2G). Is this true?
Also, I called my buddy who is a diehard iPhone user and talked to him for a bit. Although I do respect his opinion, he is also sometimes wrong. He mentioned something about Firmware 02.30.03 and how it cant be unlocked? And if I am in the market for getting an iPhone, make sure it isnt running this FW? True?
Anyway, I would love to get this for my wife as I completely blew it on Valentines Day and made her cry (I know, I was a ****. I just dont buy into V-Day). I just want to make sure I know what to expect when I grab her this iPhone 3G. I have shopped around on Craigslist and found a few reasonable deals so I would like to jump on one ASAP. So what do you all have for me information wise?
Here are some specifics I am looking for:
1) Is jailbreaking a thing of the past?
2) Is FW 02.30.03 not able to be unlocked?
And please share any other information you think is pertinent. I am looking for tips, ideas and such.02-25-09 11:15 PMLike 0 - 1. You will still need to jailbreak it in order to unlock it.
2. I'm sure after its been out for a few weeks the Dev Team will figure out an unlock for it.
The iPhone hasn't changed much imo. Especially if you are on T-mo. You have no 3g speeds so the only changes are cosmetic. I was using a 3g after using my 2g. there was no difference to me.
The nice thing about the iPhone is you don't have to upgrade to the newer version. Stick with 2.2 and you'll be fine.02-25-09 11:37 PMLike 0 - Okay, so jailbreaking is still a requirement. Good to go. Thanks. I have been reading a lot this evening and there is HUGE amount of information, threads and such regarding the jailbreaking/unlocking process.
My wife doesnt much care about the 3G issue (neither do I). I did suggest maybe getting her a 1st gen iPhone but she really wants a white 3G.
Plus she got this big woody for this Innocase Power Slider case that has a built in battery? Kind of cool I guess.
So now I need to find a 3G iPhone running 2.2 with baseband 02.30.03.02-25-09 11:42 PMLike 0 - 02-25-09 11:43 PMLike 0
- Yes jailbreaking will come first. Search QuickPWN I used this to unlokc both my 2g and 3g iPhones.
I was going to mention something about the white 16gb and how she'd prolly like that one the most. You beat me to it. ha.02-25-09 11:57 PMLike 0 - So I read this over at the "Dev Team Blog"
"If you have a 3G iPhone running 2.2 firmware and you want to keep your ability to use yellowns0w (or the option to use it in the future) do NOT use QuickPwn, and do not use the official ipsw or the iTunes update process without using PwnageTool."
Is there another solution to yellowsnow? I assume yellowsnow is an unlocking program?02-26-09 12:13 AMLike 0 - DuviRetired ModeratorOn the iPhone 3g, jailbreaking would have to come first as the unlocker is within an app (you may remember it by 'installer' or you use the more popular one, cydia).
It's the baseband that disables you from unlocking for t-mobile. The new iPhones being sold at AT&T and Apple now have it. It comes with the new firmware 2.2.1. The baseband (modem firmware) is 02.30.03 and with this, there isn't a software unlock for it.
There are other ways, but I wouldn't try it.02-26-09 12:18 AMLike 0 - Gotcha. Aparently I have now read that the above statement about FW 2.2 and yellowsn0w is incorrect and it WILL work...02-26-09 12:27 AMLike 0
- All at&t and apple phones are now shipped with 2.2.1
Your best shot is to find one off ebay that is 2.2 and unlocked. A 16GB new iphone at apple will cost $520-540 with tax so paying $600 off ebay really isn't that bad since your getting one unlocked.
Just don't update the software when you plug it into itunes.02-26-09 10:53 AMLike 0 - I know but this statement threw me off...

"02-26-09 11:11 AMLike 0 - Are you using a mac? Use pwnage tool. If I can do a jailbreak, anyone can. Just remember do not update through itunes if your jail broke or want to keep an already jail broke phone unlocked. Wait until the JB team(s) give you the green light to do so.

Great forums with great tutorials02-26-09 04:26 PMLike 0 - I've had a Bold and she wasnt impressed. I had a 8900 for a VERY brief moment and she didnt care for it either. She likes my Storm BUT doesnt care for the SurePress.02-26-09 06:35 PMLike 0

Great forums with great tutorials02-26-09 06:36 PMLike 0 - I can't imagine not having 3G but if you and her don't mind if then go for it
Posted from my CrackBerry at wapforums.crackberry.com02-26-09 10:23 PMLike 0 - Ya, its never been an issue. I have had the Bold, Storm and other high end phones (non blackberry) and have always used EDGE on em. 3G is nice and all but it hogs battery life. Funny thing is, I am such a heavy user and battery life has always been an issue for me, even when using these phones on EDGE. I cant imagine feeding my habit with a 3G phone. One of these days I may jump over.02-27-09 12:44 PMLike 0
- I went back to Edge last night just to get a taste of it and man I couldn't imagine spending the money for a Bold or iPhone and not having 3G. So slow compared to the 3G reception I get..02-27-09 02:46 PMLike 0
- I don't mind T-mobile's EDGE speeds. I save loads of money by staying with T-mobile. And since they share towers most of the time (here in so cal), my coverage is pretty much on par with ATT. No real reason to switch, yet.02-28-09 10:48 AMLike 0
- I did some comparisons to my friends iphone 3g with my 2g phone on tmobile and it wasn't that much faster. Some pages loaded faster.
Posted from my CrackBerry at wapforums.crackberry.com02-28-09 01:56 PMLike 0 - Everybody has a different speed based on the area they are in.
I'm just saying the difference between my 3G and EDGE is a LOT.02-28-09 04:29 PMLike 0 - Ohh I know. I agree completely. Im just saying, for where I live and my needs, EDGE works fine for me.
With all the time spent here, it makes me sort of want an iPhone. In case you didnt my other thread, I snagged a brand new iPhone sealed in box for 350!
I have been playing with it all day and its bringing back some crazy fond memories. some things the iPhone just does so freaking well.03-01-09 05:22 PMLike 0 - Ohh I know. I agree completely. Im just saying, for where I live and my needs, EDGE works fine for me.

And I do enjoy my Storm (not so much love anymore). This iPhone is enticing me. I have downloaded a whole slew of apps and I am really impressed with how well some of them work on the iPhone. Ahh memories...03-01-09 08:52 PMLike 0
