    Just saw this:
iPhone 'Self Combusts' on Australian Flight - The Next Web.
Passengers onboard internal Australian flight Regional Express ZL319 had something of a smartphone surprise on Friday after it emerged that a passengers iPhone started emitting smoke and glowing red hot just as the plane landed.

The Register tipped us to a news release by the Australian airline which noted the self combustion of the iPhone during a flight between Lismore and Sydney. According to the release, a flight attendant was required to comply with company safety procedures which meant carrying out recovery actions to ensure the red glow was extinguished successfully.

None of the passengers or crew on board the flight were harmed, luckily the incident had taken place after the flight had touched down in Sydney.

Judging by a photo of the device, the handset appears to be an iPhone 4 (thanks Rafael). You can quite clearly see the cracks and hole on the reverse of the handset, from where the smoke poured out and the red glow was emitted.

Whilst reports are few and far between, iPhone owners have shared experiences of their handsets exploding when in use. Similar to this story, users have noticed the handset running very hot before exploding.

In device teardowns, the iPhone 4 has been shown to house a battery just below the case on the right-hand side of the device. Given the heat of the phone and the smoke, it would appear the battery could be at fault.

Apple recently identified battery issues affecting its first-generation iPod Nano MP3 players. The company issued a recall notice for the Nano, replacing the device free of charge.
Besides making a beeline for Apple forums and trolling them with this, there is another problem with this news which might effect all smartphone users.
This could happen to any phone and the Airline Security Mafia will now seek to ban all handheld devices on board. I'd hate to be on a flight without my tablet or smartphone to keep me entertained.
Another way to harass flyers....anyone taking any bets if this happens soon?

That would REALLY suck if they started to ban smartphones, tablets, iPods, even laptops on all flights

But I can see it happening eventually....

With many years history and few incidents with battery powered devices, one isolated battery failure is unlikely to cause a global restriction. If there was going to be a restriction it would have come years ago when it was a regular problem with laptop batteries.

I feel more for the poor owner who probably had it in his pocket for a near miss from serious injury.

It is more likely we will be required to pass security screening in underwear only. It has already come close to that for some. I had a problem with a pair of trousers which have a permanently attached belt... all belts must go through the X-ray...

The airline industry already is running on low margins, doing something like this would increase the call and demand for commuter train service, I would take a 3h train and be connected the entire time, over a 2h flight/airport experience

as it is now I often balance my needs for a 90min flight I take that is a 5h drive from home, the travel to the airport, parking, security, and restrictions on what I travel with make the flight a wash almost in savings.

yeah thats true I guess... Hopefully they don't do something stupid like that.

I would also take a 3hr train and be connected the entire time, rather than deal with all the BS at the airport for a shorter trip.

The word "explode" was put in by the OP. I imagine it was done for effect. Is that the definition of semantics?

And in further news the iPhone "exploding" caused rapid decompression the stock market to crash rim stock to still suck, starving nations, Chinese labor problems, closed ecosystems, people wearing black long sleeve t-shirts with jeans , a genuine hatred for everything not Apple and world hunger. Details at eleven. And any natural disaster for the next 20 years.

There is probably an app to make your phone emit smoke. Publicity stunt!!

Kidding. That's really a bummer for the owner of the phone.

What was interesting was when I got my iPhone replaced. The old one got REAL hot I mean like I felt it through an Otterbox Commuter and my shirt pocket.

It didn't explode but it probably would have if the flight attendant wouldn't have estingueshed it.

I wonder who's gonna pay the bill for that incident, Apple?

If it's a defect within the phone, then Apple should pay, and be held liable for any other damages.

I'm sure it will run into a few thousands, that's before other passengers claim compensation
