Getting an iphone with only a calling plan

I was thinking about just starting a plan w/ at&t and only getting a calling plan.
Then i could get an iphone, put my sim in, and jailbreak it. Using the jailbreak, i could get free sms and mms.
Does this seem like a good idea at all? or just plain crazy?

I think this would work but you would have to be careful not to do anything that is only covered in the iphone plan

I believe AT&T requires a data plan with the iPhone

I know att requires one for the iphone, but what if i just bought a cheap phone that doesnt require one. then just jailbreak it & only use wifi.. idk if this too risky or not

Sounds risky to me. Iphones arent that much you can get the 3G one for 99 and I paid 200 for my 3GS if you really want an iphone. The data plan is $30. You could get the lowest mins which is 450 mins and 5,000 weekend mins and it's $39.99 a month. If you didnt want texting you dont have to get it. If you want to take the risk then thats your business, but sounds crazy to me.
