There is a myth, which says that programming for BlackBerry is complex or otherwise difficult. I don't believe that, I'm a programmer myself. It is true that Java is a very common language, but I won't discuss the C vs. Java debate here; there is enough of that on the Web.
Apple "revolutionized" (as they like to say it) the App Store principle and partly due to this there are many many many applications available for the iPhone, because developers saw more potential for their application to capture a broad audience, versus minimal chances to succeed in the BlackBerry world. Also, for a quite long time there was no central, unified application store for the BlackBerry; only recently did App World come up. This meant that developers had difficulties finding a good way to promote and distribute their software.
Android gets natural response from developers as it is open source. I am part of the open source community as well (Linux junkie!) and I know for a fact that 'we' are a very vocal community, so anything open source gets much attention and development carries on full force. This is partly the reason why Android has much support from developers.
