Default Getting Back into Programming

I have been out of programming for about 6 years as I moved into SAP Security. Prior to this I was working in VB, SQL/Oracle and C+. I graduated in '99 from Computer Programming which basically touched a little on every type of language.

Being in Security, I don't do much development and would like to get back into it, but where do I start? I've tried to navigate through the various links at BlackBerry and came out a little confused with all the various terminology.

Thanks Everyone !

I'm not an ABAP'er but I can understand it to a certain extent. I don't believe it is that difficult to get into it.

I want to learn the to create BB Apps now

Nobody can give me direction on where to start?

BlackBerry - Development Approaches
--

I would choose BlackBerry Tablet OS Application Development - why? Because the next generation of blackberry smartphones will use the same platform the tablet now uses (QNX).

However, you can't go wrong with Java Application Development - why? Because millions of ppl are out there using OS 7 and OS 6 devices...

Good luck.

Hi cghall,

As noted by the previous posting, there are quite a few different languages/platforms that you can use to develop apps for BlackBerry. You should first decide which language/platform you would like to use. I think the best question to answer first is what kind of apps would you like to make? The type of app you want to make likely dictates a which development environment you would want to use.

Secondly, what is your main reason for making apps? Is it to make money as an entrepreneur? Is it to "hack" and to make apps that mainly you would use yourself? Is it for career development?

The main development environments for PlayBook/BB10 are:
* HTML5
* C/C++ (also called "native")
* Adobe Flash
* port apps from Android
* there also a number of gaming engines like Unity that can used

The main development environments for BlackBerry OS 7.0 and earlier devices are:
* HTML5
* Java (also called "native")

There is no "one-size fits all" solution.
