The hardest part in making an app is figuring out the requirements, which is "what the app will do". If you put some thought into describing how you think this app should behave, what features it should have, and so on, you'll have a better chance of getting someone interested in doing it.

we are looking in to something for DJs already... including some of the functions Pioneer offers. but its all about performance. if we wont be able to do a real time player and mixer with sync function, pitch, sound control etc. than this wont be a project you'll see in real life, at least not from us. you need to rely on app when you're a DJ and you wont be happy if your app will froze when you play...

Understandable! I just want to show up to the club with my playbook and start killin um' lol I know it won't be a real hard on set but the basic two deck cross fade sync and sound control would be ideal, let's start off with a reasonable app and keep building from there. I'm telling you this app can make $$$

Creating a VirtualDJ remote would be nice. Just like they have done with the ipod and ipad.

I'm with you on that . Let's see if we can rally more people to contact Atomix and have them build one for the PlayBook.

I would recommend this actually. I could probably hobble something together but any serious company already in the market could probably do better, faster and easier by porting their existing code via the NDK...

Im not opposed to it I just have concerns about the limitations in the current AIR sdk for audio and the amount of time it would take.

Today I asked Hexler , h e x l e r . n e t , to develop a port of TouchOSC for Blackberry Playbook. TouchOSC has been released for Android and iOS and it's a software for create and use customizable control surfaces for MIDI and OSC compatible DJ and production music software like Traktor, Virtual DJ, Ableton Live, Logic, etc.
You can contact them at support@hexler.net
I told them that many of the Playbook users are interested, so, if many of you contact them may be they would think about releasing a port of TouchOSC.

I'd be first in line to build such an app, but to be really useful we would need:
  1. a pro audio interface with XLR (on stage a mini jack should be avoided like the plague)
  2. ability to connect MIDI or MIDI-over-USB devices - to control the app on the PB via a control surface (e.g. knobs or pressure sensitive pads), or to control outboard equipment via the PB.
  3. ability to connect a power supply

1 and 2 could be done if we had API access to USB host mode, which we don't, or something like Apple's Core MIDI and their camera connection kit, which doesn't exist for PB.

Furthermore, if the Micro-USB port is in use for 1 & 2 we'd need to power the PB via the cradle power port, especially if powering USB stuff for any length of time off the PB. Not really a practical solution.

That said, the PlayBook would be the most suitable tablet for this task due to it's rock-solid QNX microkernal stability. Working as a sound-engineer I've seen many an artists laptop or iPad crashing mid-performance.

I would love an app like this!

It doesn't have to be that thorough. Something that could display a "virtual" dj set up. Two turntables and a mixer and the ability to drag and drop music files onto turntables to play them. If anyone has used Rane Serato before, they know what I'm talking about.

Maybe a pro or premium version could include MIDI controls and/or other features. Heck, if someone could figure out a way to turn the PB into time-coding hardware (like the break out box of Rane Serato's rig), that would be AWESOME! I would pay big money for that if I was still in the scene.

As a former DJ/music producer/sound engineer for years, I'd love to provide any help or input if someone needs it to make a quality app
