Button summary?

Hey all:

I am building a theme and i was wondering about summary while focused in on a button. I have seen some themes that when on the home screen you are able to hover over your custom buttons and see a summary of the selected button. What i mean by this is for example when you hover over calender you would see a summary of 4-5 days worth of what is coming up , or over your messages/ sms/mms a summary of what in the inbox. How do i do this would you do this does anyone know?
