Default Beginning J2ME

First i'd like to thank the vast majority of you that have helped out us newbies. I've been playing with the JDK and was capable of building my own "Hello World" app from scratch. However, thats all I can do. I am lost when it comes to api's, etc...

I know there are online resources available but I came across this book at Barnes & Noble: Beginning J2ME, The Expert's Voice in Java Ser., Sing Li, Book - Barnes & Noble

I am very tempted to buy it, but at $44.99 I wanted to know if any of you may be familar with the book... If it's even the right type of book for what I want to ultimately be doing. (Programming for the Storm as well as porting apps for the iPhone, G1, etc) The primary reason I am looking at buying it is the fact that everything seems to be covered by this one book rather than hunting through tutorials online.

I've taught myself PHP and HTML, obviously they are both much easier than Java but I believe it won't be too terribly hard. I'm more of those hands on type of people, I do it and if it doesn't work I either do it again or fix it.

I'm in the same situation and have the exact same question.

BTW the book is only $29 @ Amazon.

If you happen to live in San Diego, CA, let me know. Maybe we can learn together...

Hey there. Two things....try Java for Dummies, it's actually pretty good. Also, Google "Java Ranch". I'm taking a beginning Java course and these two resources helped me immensely.

The books that exist for J2ME development are lacking and they definitely do not address most BlackBerry development situations. Developing for the BlackBerry is best done with their proprietary APIs as their standards support is somewhat lacking and all of the fun APIs are RIM specific.

The book in question assumes previous java experience. As I am also teaching myself it I recommend a top down approach. Learning java and then bracing into me. My progression has been head first java which is good but assumes some java knowledge also. So I recently bought the 9in1 java 6.0 dummies reference guide which has helped tremendously and the above me book for when I move into that section.
I come from a c background so this is all pretty new for me.

There is a new book available for pre-order on amazon.com called BlackBerry Development Fundamentals. It's not a deep Java book, but covers all aspects of BlackBerry development.

The book's site is bbdevfundamentals
