| | Tether for Android
Non rooted.
I've used EasyTether free on my Thunderbolt and it worked well. Some issues with connecting at times though.
I loved the app Tether on my BlackBerry and I see it is available in the Android Market. It has terrible reviews though!
Has anyone used the Tether app on their Android? If it is as good as BlackBerry version I don't mind paying $30.

What are you going to tether to? Just curious and does your htc have wifi hotspot? I haven't used tether on android though.

My Thunderbolt does have Mobile Hotspot capability. I used it for free for a month as a promotion. Worked well. I think adding MHS to my account is $30 for unlimited Hotspot since I'm on a grandfathered plan.
I am looking at laptops right now to use when I start school in January. I haven't had a computer since 1999 (haven't been to school since1997, ha).
So I'd like to use my device to tether to my new laptop, when I get it. I considered just adding Hotspot plan to my device through VZW, but right now that is a little out Iof my budget.

Ah, thanks. Now I know that you probably know someone that can get you that hotspot going where vzw would never know the difference.

Never have used those options. Most custom ROMs come with it rolled in. Might be worth rooting.

Wouldnt it just be easier to root and find one that works without having to pay your carrier?
There really are no downsides to rooting. It can be undone, it doesn't compromise anything, and is no different than giving yourself "Administrator Privileges" on a computer.
And at this point in the game..with you being so unhappy about having to carry around a brick due to the extended battery..there has to be some ROM's out there that are giving good battery life with just the stock battery (or at least maybe an extended one that still fits with the custom battery door). And didn't they figure out a way to turn off the LTE with the Thunderbolt?
Personally..i'd be exploring the other side of Android. The one that truly opens the doors and lets the user explore..before i'd be exploring other phones. But that's just me

You have to pay extra to use your phone as a WiFi hotspot? Is this the case with all American carriers? I'm in Canada and this is news to me. I've been using tethering and wifi hotspot for almost four years, now with no extra charges (ios, symbian and android devices) on two different carriers.

I have the Thunderbolt rooted with stock rom 2.11.605.5 and tether without issues. I originally intended on paying for mobile hot spot but since I've had no issues I haven't paid.

There's also an app in the market called pdanet that allows free tether, but I haven't played around with it yet. Unfortunately T-Mo's newest phones don't allow free hotspot anymore. I might just have to try rooting.
Also, when I was in school I'd almost always go to a coffeehouse to do homework, even though I have wifi at home. I always got too distracted at home.

When using tethering apps like this, is there any risk of exposing my device data on the internet anyway?

Just set up a password and you should be ok.

What is the faster connection?
Mobile Hotspot through VzW and Bolt
Tether App
Tethering through VZW
Public WiFi
Thanks!
