Default task killer?

Hi! I am new to the android world, have been an iphone user for the past 4 years. I just got the Samsung infuse 4g and was told by at&t reps that i need to download a task killer app.Is this really necessary ?

Android works its best when multiple apps are running. You absolutely do not need a task killer. Don't ever go to a store rep for advice because the majority of the time they will steer you wrong.

Exactly. When you kill apps, the system runs slower because it's optimized to run a certain amount of apps at once and it also impacts your battery life. That's the great thing about Android, you don't ever have to worry about running apps or task killers like BB.

The best thing to do is root it and run Autokiller or something similar and improve the level of killing. I use the strict preset and it made my Droid 3 on the stock ROM feel so much faster.

Improve the level of killing? Bad advice, there is absolutely no rhyme or reason to kill a running program on Android. That's not only my advice but it's a recommendation thats all over tech blogs, podcasts and Android websites.

BTW IMO Android devices these days are running their best out of the box and I wouldn't even recommend rooting for the purpose of running custom ROM's anymore.

I'd still root, regardless. I mean, if a user was willing, and curious, I would. I learned not to be loyal to any one developer. Even though I run a nice distribution of Linux, most of setup isn't stock Slackware. To get the most out of Android, I still recommend rooting. I'm not talking about development, either

Task killers make your battery life worse.

Android has awesome memory management. It also doesn't have hogs like X windows

Um...you don't know what I am talking about. Autokiller tweaks Android's memory management. It's not a task killer. I just rooted to tweak my phone a tad but I still run the stock ROM on my Droid 3 anyway.

A task killer is not necessary on Android. The platform takes care of everything.
The reps need to really be taught on what to do and what not to do. When I sold wireless I not only kept informed on my own time, but I made sure I attended classes to make sure I gave out the right information.
