Default Samsung Galaxy SII Wifi issues

So i just picked up a Samsung Galaxy SGII , and I want to play around with it to see if if I want to switch from my 9900.

Issue is I cant get anything to work on just wifi. Well basic browser works, and the market works... but I cant get apps and other stuff to work on WiFi.

I thought one of the advantages of Android was less restrictions, I am used to the BIS speech, get a data plan to use apps.

Anyone have any insight?
