The multitouch keyboard is killer.
I just came back from attepting to buy one. It's not as big as I originally thought and the huge screen is nice. Very speedy. I just got done ordering online and am hoping it arrives well before 7/23.
Why not open a Droid X Forum?
There are already enhanced installable versions on XDA. Check them out. you can find them in the Evo Apps section.
I just returned from my local Verizon store. They received 100 Droid X phones. They had people camped out since 5:30 in the morning to get them. All of the phones were gone by noon. So I ordered mine online.
I am a long time SmartPhone user. In fact, I bought the first smartphone, a Palm & phone combination made by Kyocera. I have tried and used quite a number of Smartphones over the years, including several Blackberry phones. Recently, I have used the Curve, the Storm, and the Storm 2.
I believe that RIM is a very credible company with products that meet the needs of many people. However, I have always believed that RIM is a "one trick pony". That is, a company that does one thing very well (email), but doesn't do anything else very well. At this point, other phones do an adequate job of email; not as good as RIM, but adequate. And at this point, other smartphones do everything else much better than RIM. While RIM may be selling to more locations around the world; primarily 3rd. world countries, they are loosing market share in the industrialized nations. They are loosing to the iPhone and to Android.
I believe I am one of the many that have decided to move away from RIM to Android. Unlike others, I will not "bash" RIM. I wish them and their Users well, and I hope that they add enough functionality to force other companies to become better. However, my belief is that RIM will continue to lag behind the industry and will continue to loose market share. That said, if RIM does come out with a hot new product, I will certainly consider buying it.
Finally, I must say that I am happy to be leaving CrackBerry behind. All of the people and most of the Editors are great. However, I will not miss the 3rd. grade analysis and opinions of Kevin. In my estimation, the other Forums (iPhone, Android, etc.) all have Editors with at least 20 IQ points on Kevin. I am hopeful that when Kevin finally reaches puberty, he will be able to write something of substance.
I was also shocked that the Droid X wasn't bigger. It Is amazingly thin though. But I didn't like the looks of the keyboard. I did try it out and it was accurate, but the keys seemed to be thinner than my EVO keyboard. The UI that they have on it is fine but it isn't like sense. But other than those things, the device is killer. Congratulations to everyone who was lucky enough to het one today. You have the best device on Verizon.
By the way, I like Kevin and the articles he writes. just my two cents.
I am getting some weird battery problems. I was at 100 percent, fulled with it alot till I got to 50 percent( over 3 hours), from there, once I hit 50, it went to the battery warning and complete shutdown in a matter of minutes.
Some have posted some issues, please confirm once again.
The browser...interesting things going on. With my Incredible, wordwrap worked wonderfully everytime, no issues. With the X, if I load CNN or any site vertically, it won't wordwrap. Once I go to landscape, it will wordwrap and when I go from landscape to verticle, it wordwraps....weird stuff.
The other issue I have is with my Cox e-mail....I won't go there because I am too tired right now.
My first impressions so far are so so. Coming from the Incredible, to be quite honest, I am a bit let down. I will surely give it a try though. My Incredible browser was faster, clearly faster in my book.
kinda **** but then again not, ordered a case for my droid x just before i ordered the x. received tracking for X but not the case, called verizon they say they dont have any information on the case so im like WTF and they took the money out my account already for the case... what should i do if the case dont show up tomorrow?
They should be able to look at your bill where your case was charged... ask for a refund if don't receive your case.
No doubt I'll definitely take a look.
Well, I showed up at my local Verizon store at 9:04 am (just after opening). There were apparently about 20 people outside at opening, and the store had received 40 units or so. I got one, but I'm sure they were sold out by noon. If I'd been able to afford the upgrade to a Storm 2 last fall when it was out I'm sure I'd have been able to hold out for a few more months in hope of Storm 3 news, but at this point I'm ready for something more app-centric (and with wi-fi). I very much like everything about the DX except for the battery life under heavy load (and I put it under very heavy load today), but honestly even the Storm dies pretty fast when I do nothing but surf and run apps (and at least it's much faster now with a device that is 18 months newer).
I have silently enjoyed crackberry for the last 2 years before I joined a couple weeks ago, and I hope no one will mind if I continue to contribute to the forums. I still admire RIM as a company and hope they push out winning products They are in a difficult position in the market and haven't always made the best choices, yet in my opinion they've done better than many others, including Palm, Apple, and Nokia. I could certainly be talked back into a Storm 3 or 4 if they are compelling enough, and I hope RIM stays on top of the game enough to do so. Certainly RIM email handling is generally superior at this juncture.
But the Droid X is pretty darned sweet if your hands fit the size.
well i got my tracking for my case today at 5:00 AM -____- its coming with the droid x today i cant wait!!
*Sigh* when I have FedEx deliver to my home they come at the last possible moment and I always miss it. Now I had my X sent to work and it's already there (9am delivered) and I don't go in for a few hours....
boooyyaaaa
If you don't have launcherpro installed on your X...get it....now.
gonna charge mines up a bit before i start tweaking lol
Ok boys n girls...
I didn't wait for it to be shipped I went and got it.
There were some people camped out. There was another grease or two there as well. Suprisingly some chucks as well.
Ok when I got it I had mixed emotions. I did however put
Open Home full on it because that Motorola stuff is gonna drive me crazy.
Games, to be honest the Fascinate/Galaxy will be a better gaming device. Played Raging Thunder 2. It does lag now and again. But not bad. The racing game that comes preloaded runs smooth and the graphics is nice.
On to today, the more I use this thing the more I like it. The FM radio actually gets the local stations. The dial pad u actually feel like u are using a phone. The bluetooth volume is pretty good.
The browser is fast, actual opening up apps this thing is fast.
The camera all I can say is play with your settings. U can adjust the iso and the exposure. The higher the iso the more light vice versa.
Also u can adjust the exposure; u can adjust that up or down. So with the right combo exposure and iso u can probably get some nice pics without flash.
Ok saw someone with an Iphone 4. Had him load up the same site
the X as far as image quality can hold its own. N its a funky a$$ed lil thing. This really isn't a bad device pretty darn good if u ask me.
Yes there might be some quirks but this device is on hit......
My one pet peeve is this. The ringer volume is too low.
nicely put but i think its the speaker thats low also try playing a song and listen how low it sounds. droid def got a better speaker
I second that:D
Picked my Droid X up at my local BB Thursday morning, and haven't had much time to customize it until tonight. I must say coming from my Storm this thing is supper speedy. So many options and features, I feel like a kid in a candy store.
I have officially moved to Android, but I have nothing against Blackberry, in fact I'm keeping my little curve as a backup, sold the crap Storm but I do love my old reliable blacked out curve and it's real keyboard!
A droid X forums is not needed. It is part of Android. A sub-forum for it within the Android sub-forum would be more appropriate. Then you can do that for every device to organize the clutter.
wow just called verizon because i noticed i didnt buy the phone 1 yr contract -_____- so yea a extra 70 bucks was charged to my account and i could upgrade my phone again in march 2011 :D
After two days of use, I've mostly finished customizing the phone to suit my needs, and have put it through it's paces. I've also recharged it 3 times (and will a fourth tonight) although battery life is definitely getting better as I turn off stuff I don't need and get through a couple recharges.
My impressions so far:
-Ridiculously fast. Not just compared to my Storm (come on, the poor thing is 18 months old!) but to any phone I've handled (I haven't handled an iPhone 4 due to lack of interest, sorry). Browsing web sites (especially with wifi) is as fast as using my previous desktop using a previous gen broadband connection at my last residence.
-Gmail works like a BB user would expect, but the other stock mail apps suck. Hard. Luckily, 3rd party apps like maildroid work fairly well (set up is just as easy, if not as simple as on a BB, although the UI is far inferior at the moment).
-While push email can be accomplished with a little know-how, the lack of push in general is a real problem with battery life. The phone can do all sorts of cool things, but letting all of the widgets update on a regular basis means the phone checks in over wifi or 3g ALL THE TIME, whereas on the Storm a lot of those things were getting pushed rather than requiring server checks. While I (obviously) have an unlimited data plan, it still consumes a ton more battery power to try and handle all of those checks. I really hope RIM can make a similar touchscreen smartphone beast that combines the better ideas of using push/cloud concepts (even take a look at Kin Studio) to leverage their best in class push-server investment. It would be the killer app for everyone: end users, carriers, RIM (as it sells more phones and data plans).
- I adore the customization. I have totally ignored the pre-installed bloat-ware in favor of app-market versions or stock versions...and I can do that. While RIM runs circles around the iPhone in terms of customization by the end user, Android runs circles around those circles. Resizable live widget icons are fantastic. Live wallpapers are a great idea too, although their impact on battery life makes them impractical IMO.
Conclusion: After using a Blackberry for almost 2 years, my expectations do make some of the shortcomings obvious. But the benefits at this point in time are well worth it. The speed, the memory size, the app-centric core, the customization all make the phone more productive for my purposes. I really hope that an upcoming Storm (or other RIM product) can convince me to move back, but while RIM has some strategic advantages, they gauntlet has been thrown done. They need to at the least keep up in hardware specs, while also leveraging their past investments in push technology to benefit a wider array of customers.
I hope they can do it.
