Massive security vulnerability in HTC Android phones claimed - Computerworld

This + battery life = the Fiddy-man will never own an Android. Ever.

What was the fix? The article only states jailbreaking. It also looks like it became public Friday.

Android Central covered this

http://www.androidcentral.com/htc-co...y-way-security

Ya it sucks it happens,
I'm Sure HTC will play damage control, now that it has been made public
Does it change my decision to buy an HTC? nope since I haven't owned one since 2008 and don't plan to buy another for many more years.

This is the kind of thing that RIM should be all over. Although most regular folks out there probably won't care until they are personally affected.

This happens with every OS. They plug the hole and then someone discovers a new one.

Old news? Really? It was only uncovered a week ago and made public this past Friday. My worst experience with a mobile device ever was with a Windows Mobile phone. But I'd still buy a WP-something phone before an Android anything.

I am honestly not surprised at this. I have long suspected that Android was moderately insecure when compared to a BlackBerry.

The large number of hardware platforms that support Android must, make for a security nightmare when writing device drivers and interfaces.

It is hard to make a portable device totally secure and the BlackBerry has managed this better than any other platform. Even then we hear, only last week, that a Russian outfit had managed to retrieve BlackBerry passwords if they had access to a BlackBerry encrypted Media Card. The fix was simple, don't encrypt your Media Card. This problem illustrates just how hard it is to make phones totally secure.

For all its faults, the BlackBerry OS is very mature (outdated, some say) but there has been time to plug the security holes. Android and iOS have not had this time. It is therefore not surprising that the occasional holes are discovered.

For me, the fix is simple. STICK WITH BLACKBERRY.

LOL.

I do think RIM could do a better job of pointing to it's strength, which is security. The truth is, however, that most people don't care. it's not a major selling point amongst consumers, and even government agencies are adjusting to securing devices by creating apps that allow secure access to Enterprise.

It's a changing mobile landscape.

Agreed. And despite the articles title..I'd hardly consider this a MASSIVE security flaw. It's not collecting passwords or credit card info or text's or IM's..but rather the general day to day data from your phone. Call logs, geo-locations etc..which could be retrieved with a malicious app..although what they'd do with my battery stats and knowing I went to the supermarket (if I had gps enabled) is beyond me.

Now..if Google passed out my credit card info to some shady online people..or if my phone turned into a Decepticon and stole money from my wallet while I was sleeping..maybe then i'd be concerned. But then I'm not one to live in a walled up world worried about the bogey man around every corner.

I agree with you totally, and that's why I feel RIM's two co-CEO's need the boot--they aren't changing their stances in how to best manage RIM's future.
