- For the most part, I'm really loving this phone. Coming from a Motorola Droid, it's taking some time getting used to the different layout and everything, but that's part of the fun! Unfortunately, I seem to be experiencing some minor and not-so-minor problems with it and I was just wondering if anyone knows of any fixes for them, or if it sounds like I need to send it back and get a new one.
There are little things, like sometimes the notification LED (which is so oddly placed and weak!) doesn't always light up when I've received a new message. This is really only an issue at night, as I can't see the damn thing light up during the day anyway. Also, I've chosen the option to not play the alert sound when I receive a new email, but it always goes off anyway. (And I've tried battery pulls.)
The more frustrating issues I'm having are that when I'm on a call, the phone will mute itself (either that or I'm inadvertently hitting the mute button with my face somehow) and the other person can't here me so I'm constantly having to unmute it. Isn't there any kind of lock feature while you're on a call, so that sort of thing can't happen? Or does it sound like it just has a glitch?
Also, a few times now when I go to enter text, it becomes unresponsive and the letters will not show up in the text box. I end up having to shut the phone off and turn it back on to get it to start working. It's only happened three times, but still... I've only had the phone for 2 days!
Lastly, there have been a couple times I've sent a text message to (to two different people) where the message ends up coming through under a really weird, long number and taking my contact info out. So the person on the receiving end can't reply to it.
Does it sound like I need to request a new phone? Or is this just "normal" for this phone?04-01-11 05:31 PMLike 0 - 04-01-11 05:36 PMLike 0
- You should do a Factory Data Reset before you take it back (Menu, Settings, Privacy, Factory Data Reset). Verizon will do one anyway to see if that resolves the issues you are having before agreeing to replace the phone.04-02-11 04:26 AMLike 0
- if you are going to do a factory reset then let Verizon do it. It is easy to do, but you have only had the phone for two days.....let the techs do it04-03-11 12:13 AMLike 0
- Thanks for the replies everyone! I took your advice and called Verizon tech support Friday and was told to take it into the store to have them check it out. I did that, and of course I got a new guy... He just said they hadn't heard of the problems I was having and wasn't sure what to do. He asked me if I'd tried a few different things to fix it, and I had, so his next step was to take the SIM card out for a while and then put it back in. He said that since he couldn't duplicate the problems so he couldn't warranty it out. I told him those things don't happen every time, so it probably would be a little difficult to duplicate. He sent one test text to it, and didn't even try a call or anything... So yeah... Not gonna be very helpful.
So the next day (yesterday) it starts doing new things. It wouldn't let me open certain text threads and would give me an error message instead. When I would open other threads, it would automatically enter text and random letters in the text box that I hadn't typed. Every time. Called tech support again, and this time was put through about an hour of troubleshooting. The first lady who "helped" me tried to say at the end of our conversation that she had solved certain problems I was having... She hadn't solved a single one of my problems, so I corrected her on that. She transferred me to another guy, who suggested the factory reset. A couple hours later I was on a call that muted, then hung up on the call on its own, so I called back and then it went to speakerphone and the screen locked and I couldn't get it off.
Needless to say, I'm calling again, and this time I'm just requesting a new phone right away. This is ridiculous. The last guy I talked to even said himself that it's obvious that the problems are with the phone itself (i.e., not user error), so I can't understand why they wouldn't just send a new one. If the phone has problems like that, a factory reset isn't going to magically fix whatever's wrong with it or add something that's missing. It's going to put it back in the condition it was when I first got it, and it had problems then, too. I didn't realize they could be this stubborn with stuff. I will let you know what happens after I call today!04-03-11 10:41 AMLike 0 - yeah sometimes its a pain. i would see if you can exchange at another store also. so you dont have to wait that way04-03-11 10:49 AMLike 0

Again, Verizon will not replace a phone that hasn't had a Factory Data Reset because a lot of "problems" can be due to software conflicts/problems that an FDR can fix.
Edit: Your problems do not sound hardware related, but definitely software related. If the FDR doesn't solve your problem, then the device will need to be reflashed to reload the System files. Definitely not your problem to solve, but it isn't hard to use RSD Lite and the appropriate sbf file to flash the device software on the phone.Last edited by xliderider; 04-04-11 at 02:14 PM.
04-04-11 02:11 PMLike 0 - DenverRalphyRetired Network ModAside from the led and mention of a recipient getting an odd number from one of your text messages, the symptoms you mention sound like a Phantom Fingers effect. I usually only experience issues like that on a hot day where sweat/moisture from my cheek gets on the touchscreen and the capacitive array on the touchscreen goes wonky (usually results in the whole screen is unresponsive, but not always). I've seen the same thing happen with women who wear a lot of make-up (not saying you do, just recounting past experience) and the make-up transfers to the touchscreen.

04-04-11 02:22 PMLike 0 - This thread over at AC apparently solves the issue you are probably having about the text message recipients receiving a weird number.

And if you are having an issue with your face hitting mute then there is possibly a problem with the proximity sensor where the screen isn't responding appropriately when it placed and remove from your face. I haven't seen that with mine but then again I don't talk on the phone much so not sure if it's hardware or software. iPhone 4 had the same issue when it was released but a software update fixed it for the most part.Last edited by scorpiodsu; 04-04-11 at 04:07 PM.
04-04-11 04:04 PMLike 0 - I wouldn't even go to a store. Call vzw and insist they send a replacement. They are so much better than most store employees in my experience.04-04-11 04:10 PMLike 0

It really does seem that the touchscreen issue would have something to do with me "bumping" buttons on the screen with my face. I've experimented with holding it away from my face and only having it up against my ear, and I've held it flat against my face and made sure I didn't move it at all. It still happened both times. Still though, just in the movement of talking, I could be hitting something. The part that doesn't make sense to me though is the way the call screen will lock up most of the time when that happens, so I can't even get it off mute or speakerphone, and I can't even end the call. I have to tell the person to hang up and call back if it went to speaker, and I have to pull the battery to end the call if it muted and locked. I can't see what would make it lock up when there's no lock feature (for the call screen) even installed on the phone to begin with. I wish there was! Maybe then I wouldn't have those problems.
I called Verizon today and finally was able to have a new phone overnighted to me. Keeping my fingers crossed that this one is better! Since I'm the only person in existence who seems to have the majority of these issues, I would say odds are this one should work.04-04-11 06:03 PMLike 0 - And if you are having an issue with your face hitting mute then there is possibly a problem with the proximity sensor where the screen isn't responding appropriately when it placed and remove from your face. - ChrisySeeker of the WayPeople were saying that people with long hair might have problems with the proximity sensor while on a call. The solution was to try and sweep your hair away from your face, possibly tuck it behind your ear, so that the proximity sensor can sense your face properly and disable the screen touch inputs.04-06-11 03:09 PMLike 0
- Well, I received my new phone. All was going great and I thought the problems were solved. Calls were fine and I wasn't having any of the other issues I had before. Then after a few days, calls started going to speakerphone or muting. These were times that I had noticed I'd moved the phone and it always let me unmute the phone or get it off speaker without locking up so I wasn't too concerned and chalked it up to being my own fault. Then a couple days after that, it started locking up just like before. Yesterday it randomly rebooted on its own. Today on a call it opened the number pad and "hit" a bunch of buttons. The person on the other end could hear all the beeps but I couldn't, so I didn't even realize it was doing it until she asked what all that beeping was.
I'm pretty discouraged. Those are really the only problems I've had with this one so at least it's a little better than the last. I was thinking I may just have to go back to BlackBerry for a non touchscreen phone but there aren't any out right now that even remotely interest me and I know I'd miss all the features of this one. I'm convinced at this point that this has to have something to do with just me. Maybe I have some sort of weird electric charge. Ha! The long hair theory that was mentioned could be a huge factor for me, as I have very long, thick hair and it does seem like it's in the way of the phone a lot. I will start pulling it up or tying it back when in on a call and see if that helps!

Seriously, OP, best wishes. I am sure the replacement will be fine. It's tough being an early adopter some times.04-10-11 04:28 PMLike 0 - Well, I received my new phone. Posted from my CrackBerry at wapforums.crackberry.com04-10-11 08:30 PMLike 0 - So it's pretty much confirmed that the problem was your hair touching the phone?
It's still kind of weird though considering that if it's close to your face that the
proximity sensor would set in. Either way, glad the problem was solved.04-12-11 12:18 PMLike 0 - Seriously, your hair? That's close to Steve Jobs telling us how to hold our iPhone. Anyhow, I'm glad you figured out what may have been the issue, albeit a little weird though. I guess they didn't expect people with long flowing locks to be using the phone04-13-11 10:40 AMLike 0
- I'm soon to be on my third Thunder Bolt. The problems I've been having with the phone have been gradually getting worse, and new ones have popped up. I kept trying to ignore it because I didn't want to have to go through all the BS with Verizon customer service, but over the last few days it's also started dropping calls like crazy. (I know it's not me accidentally hitting the End Call button because it takes me right back to the home screen, instead of the main call screen like it always does when I actually end the call myself.) I still don't have the muting or speaker problem when my hair is out of the way, but this dropped calls thing happens regardless and that's just not gonna work for me. So I caved and called customer service. I totally lucked out and got a really nice, helpful lady who listened to the problems I was having with it, apologized, and said right away that she would have a replacement sent out to me. Why can't they all be that helpful?! Should be getting it on Wednesday. Hopefully third time's a charm...04-18-11 08:38 PMLike 0
