Default Google Maps Navigation

Tried to use this in airplane mode but it runs out of map in seconds, I presume because it needs a data connection to download the map? Is there anyway I can just download the UK map? I'm sure I read somewhere the complete google maps navigation package was preinstalled on Android devices?

You will need airplane mode to be off to use Google maps.

Yes presumably coz o need a data connection, what I'm saying is can I not download the maps all in one go so I don't then need the data connection to navigate, reason is if I'm driving where there is no mobile network I can't navigate!

google nav isn't supposed to support offline mode.

Even if you had the maps, i believe the route calculation itself uses the network as well, so...

There is/was a nav app that allowed one to pre-dl the maps, but it's not googlemaps, I forget what it was, it was awhile ago that I read that thread somewhere. As I recall it was a PIA to do it that way.

Seems a bit daft to me, I frequently travel in areas where there is no network or simply gprs and therefore the navigation wouldn't work, bit of a flaw really
