Default Going from a Bold 9700 to a SGS

So, my BB Bold 9700 has been playing up on me a lot recently, and the BBs I've owned in the past (the Pearl 8100 and Curve 8520) have often done the same. I'm getting tired of them quite frankly, especially after that last BIS downtime.

Now, it just so happens that a friend of mine is selling her old Samsung Galaxy S i9000 after upgrading to the iPhone 4S. Her phone is basically spotless, in brand new condition, and I'd get all the included accessories and a bit extra too. I did some research on it and it looks like a good phone - a lot of memory and it already has reliable ICS ROMs which run very smoothly. It seems to still be a decent Android phone despite its age.

When I've owned Android phones in the past, however, I've always had problems with them. But I always got cheap ones for under £100. I got a G1, a Hero, and a X8. The latter was alright for what it was, but the rest were far too outdated to offer a decent experience.

I'm really interested in this phone, but I'm just not sure whether I should go for it, so my question is, is the Android experience on this kind of high-end (if a little outdated) device really different in day-to-day use compared to a cheaper Android phone? And for anyone with experience with the SGS, do you prefer it to a Bold?

Please don't tell me to just get a new one, I'm a little short on the money side of things at the moment, broke student and all that...

Hello

Congrats on your SG

My background:I recently got an SGS2 after a Bold 9780.

Don't let the "dated" fool you. No not with Androids. Your phone is pretty good. 1GHz processor, 512MB RAM, etc.

Hardware wise its good. Software wise, the stock software is pretty dated although it gets the job done. I'd suggest you root it, and load a custom rom on it. I've tried several roms, starting with MIUI. There's also Cyanogenmod ROM as well.

I'm not going to give you a tutorial here but let me tell you your phone might not be the best but its great and you can definitely do a lot with it.

I haven't used a lower end Android as the SGS2 is my first Android so I wouldnt really know how to answer you. But I can tell you any Android phone depends a lot on what the user does with it. From rooting to kernels to underclocking/overclocking to custom ROMs to configurations. Unlike iPhones that come with very good out of the box settings, due to Androids fragmentations, you will need to customize things to your device and personal use.

Goodluck. And Google is your friend as always.

Thanks for the response, sounds promising

I just got the phone and it doesn't let me into recovery or download mode and the bootloader may be a faulty one thanks to Vodafone, so I might try getting another one. Bad luck but at least I got it from a friend and can easily return it. This one's good for those who don't care about firmwares but that's obviously not me

I went from a 9700 to a SGS and I was happy with it for a short period of time, and went back to my 9700 until the 9800 came out. The SGS(Captivate) is underpowered in my opinion with regards to the processor with the OS, I believe I was running 2.2 at the time(can't remember) and it was buggy for me at that time(it was awhile back), not sure if any recent updates have been made to it. The screen was great but I thought it just needed a bit more power under the hood to get the job done(in stock form), especially if you load it up with apps. It would continuously crash and reboot on me. Like KQ9 mentioned, get it rooted and modify it to your liking. Now, the SGS2 is a different beast, IMO, and the SGS does not even compare to this phone. It is a major upgrade, not just a minor one. The Android experience on the SGS, is no where near that on a SGS2. So you have to compare this experience on your SGS as a cheaper Android device as opposed to a high end one(like you mentioned) because the new ones are a lot better. The SGS2 is the best all around all touch smartphone I've ever owned(haven't owned the new Nexus yet).

Several iPhones and Androids in between.
