You can export your google contacts from Gmail as a .csv file and save it on your PC/flash drive, etc. Open Gmail in a PC browser, click on Contacts, then click on the More button, next to the "Add to my contacts" button. Select Export.

The app and software, Mobisynapse can back up your apps and contacts as well.

Quick note to any Mac users who may have this same question; Android syncs your address book with Gmail, which you can in turn have sync to Address Book on your Mac. It's just like BB Desktop but without the wires

I just exported my gmail contacts as a Google.csv file and I'm able to open the file in excel. It isn't pretty, but the information is there. Just need to format the columns and hide the extraneous stuff, but it's all there.

Keep an unedited copy around though for any possible importing into gmail in the future.

Awesome. As long as the info is there. In case of emergency!
