They have sued other companies as well, and none of their Android devices come close to the sales of the Galaxy S line. Also, Apple is still making a ton of money, with or without those products on the market.
Apple has to sue to protect IP and please investors. If there is a way for them to make money from this, the investors will love it. If they don't protect "their IP", they can upset many shareholders and I believe they can even lose their patents if not protected.
I don't agree with it, as I believe this game (that not only Apple is playing, but they are the most active) is hurting technology if the grand scheme of things. The patent system needs reform, and until then, Apple is playing the system in a way to try and give them an advantage.
The Apple fanboys will think Apple is completely right for doing this (and technically according to the system, they might be) and they will call Google out for constantly for including things they have no right to and then Google (and its fanboys) will come out and complain that Apple is stifling innovation because Google doesn't want to pay up and pay for these licenses to protect them from certain things.
Both sides are correct. This is why the patent system needs reform. These wars ARE stifling innovation, BUT if you feel like your IP is being attacked or stolen and so does your shareholder/lawyers you must do something about it to please them.
I think the whole situation sucks. I like iOS and Android. I can care less about who had what first.
Like the saying goes, "don't hate the player, hate the game".
