Yup.

Most SMS/MMS apps (like Go SMS, Handcent, etc.) have optional popup notifiers.

There are also many many widgets that will display your incoming messages and emails on your homescreen.

Can't go wrong w/ either Handcent, or Go SMS.

No laughs from us... I know it was hard for me to conceptualize a widget.

Widgets are programs that update without much user interaction. They are generally visual in nature. Quick access to info.

Check this out:

It's a big weather widget...

What device do you have?

I long press the screen, select widgets, then have some widget options there.

You can also find widgets in the Android market.

A lot apps have widgets. Some apps are really just widgets. For example, a lot of weather apps have widgets for obvious reasons.

Below, you'll see two widgets I use... one is a clock, the other is Switchpro. I can control all my radios (bluetooth, wifi, GPS) and more directly from one of my home screens. Invaluable.

So, you can get your apps/widgets in any of the app markets (Amazon, Android, GetJar, etc.)

Widgets just make life easier.

OP, just keep in mind: Go SMS is free, Handcent SMS (at least when I used it) is $3 a year (I think) for advanced services. Handcent feels like an enhanced Android Open Source Project SMS app, while Go SMS is its own animal. A lot of their items are free. The nice thing about the Go team is they have apps for just about everything.
