Default Android OS Updates not likely for most

After reviewing this chart you pretty much get the feeling that of you buy an android phone don't count on it being even close to up to date after a year of use.

http://m.bgr.com/2011/10/27/android-...d-infographic/

Fragmentation in Android is very evident after checking this out.

Wow, that DeGusta dude's got way to much time on his hands. J/K.
Interesting info tho. I read an article a week or so back, no I have no proof as I can't remember where, anyway that had a quote from a big wig google guy that was asked about the ICS update and according to him all android devices would be getting it. He went on to say the reasoning was greater stability across the platform in having every device running the same OS. This helps app developers as well.
I'd like to believe this and have no reason not to. I currently have a casio commando running the GB update which I received 3 weeks ago. This is quite the niche device as no one knows about it and everyone else seems to want the latest 4G/LTE battery sucking device that won't even pull down 4G/LTE where I go anyway.
I know alot of "normal" folks only upgrade occassionaly anyway and perhaps these types wouldn't know an upgrade from a downgrade if it bit em in the a$$. These people are the majority of users. Tech types like us here on forums upgrade more often and keep up with the latest and greatest. So if, my casio stops getting upgrades after 18 months it's not likely to affect me as I've moved on to the next device.
To sum up my thoughts on this:

Group one: Uses their phones till they die then upgrade with whatever the salesman at Verizon talks them into.(no wonder so many ifones)

Group two: Don't know an upgrade from a downgrade and could care less as long as they can text and call and occasional GPS or Restaurant check.(similar to group 1)

Group three: Is the group that visits forum sites, keeps up with what's new in tech stuff and makes an informed choice then keeps it for maybe a year at most before upgrading to better technology.

So being in group three I'm not at all surprised by DeGustas info and will continue to do as before and stay on top of things even if it means every other year I have to pay full retail for my upgrade.
Thanks for you post.

Surprisingly, I have never been anxiously awaiting an OS update on my Android like I did when I had a BB. Usually my BB had some minor or major bug that I wanted fixed.

I have to say that I've had no major or minor bugs with my Android so far, if it never gets another update I'd be okay with that. It works great as-is.
Skype was a nice addition though. But I didn't even know I'd like it so much, so I wasn't waiting for it!

I have had my DX2 since July, and it has been updated twice. I also expect that it will be updated to ICS, so I am not sure that this holds true for most phones. This is much in the same way that my Pearl 8130 never received an update past the 4.xx series of os updates, or my Storm past the 5.xx series. Older phones just don't get as much support.

I was told from a coworker the Nexus s is getting ICS. so there's hope for dual core devices getting it. I just feel for you guys on skinned experiences.

the only update I'd like to see for the bionic is a fix from moto re the data connections, whine in headphone output, and wonky refocussing on the video camera. other than that, I don't have a burning desire to get a new OS.

That's one phone lmao the chart proves it isn't a lie lol. Did you look at the chart before you posted the comment you don't believe it's not true for most, because it clearly is. Now if Google can convince all the carriers to update all their android home to ICS which is highly unlikely then you might have a point.

This is why rooting and installing custom roms is a plus. To this day, the G1 can still run some of the current roms out. Now tell me if the original iPhone can do that.

meh, I don't care so much and if I really wanted a different feel and what not, then i just root and rom the phone.

I have actually been content with 2. 3 thus far and just using different launchers for a different OS feel.

It's funny because there's fragmentation in every OS. No OS will never not go through fragmentation. As newer hardware is released, older hardware will always be left behind.

Same thing goes for computers, consoles, etc. I just keep something until I'm tired of it or it breaks. No point in wasting anymore money always trying to grab the latest and greatest just to brag even though over 90% of ppl with smartphones don't utilize most of their features.

Yep, an advantage of Android as a platform. If you really want a ROM, you can get it.

To be fair, a lot of those phones listed were very raw devices, as were the first couple of iterations of Android itself.

This is a case in which past history will likely not be a good indicator of future decisions by Google and its hardware partners.
