Android OS
Has anyone used an Android phone? G1, Magic? If so how is t he OS? I have been considering getting an Android phone (HTC Hero when it is released) but I have some reservations about it. Is the OS still in need of "maturing"?
I do want the BlackBerry Onyx though, so I may just stick to that. But if an Android phone comes to AT&T I will consider as well... - 07-31-2009, 10:03 AM #2
I have a G1 that I use on T-Mobile. I have had it for a couple of weeks now. I don't think I know enough to give you an expert opinion. The OS is stable and all. It works well for me. It multi-tasks well and seems very smooth. The one kooky thing I discovered about the G1 is that you really don't close out apps. What I heard is that once you open the 7th (if I remember right) app, it starts closing apps starting with the first. So basically it constantly has 6 apps running pretty much all of the time. That is, if I understood that correctly. I did download an app from the Market called "TasKiller" that will close out all of the apps.
As far as push email goes, Gmail seems to work really well (of course). I set up a Yahoo account, but it is kind of hit and miss. I searched for a solution on the web, but found that many are having the same issue.
The Market is loaded with apps and most of them are free. There are also some widgets you can download for your home screen.
So, short story long; it's a pretty cool phone. It's not a BlackBerry just yet. But it seems to be improving. - 08-05-2009, 05:23 PM #7
I am also considering trying a non-BB phone, and the MyTouch seems like an excellent option at the moment...

Just dropped into the forums to peek around and found this thread while I was changing my profile info (remove my pin). I'm no longer a Blackberry user, myTouch 3G user as of today.
Only had it a few hours but I love it so far despite the flaws... No camera flash, no UMA, touch screen keyboard (i'll get used to this in a few weeks), no 3.5mm headphone jack. The OS is quite amazing. Signed into my google account after powering on, instantly synced my email, calendar, and contacts. I was a BB GoogleSync user which made this migration painless. Started installing a few apps to play with, no wait, you can keep using the phone while apps d/l and install, you'll get a notification when it's done. Sorry BB, I don't think I'm coming back.
After a year with BB, it just wasn't for me. I'm the type of consumer that needs a toy, not a tool. I want apps, and web pages that look like web pages. Blackberry just didn't fulfill that craving for me.This is a forum signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine. - 08-12-2009, 01:14 PM #11
I love my MyTouch 3g
I have both of the phones and I have to say that I LOVE the MyTouch 3g. i was a little nervous about getting since i've never owned an android phone before but the OS seems to be pretty stable. and the number of Apps it has seems endless!!
my blackberry is for when I want/need to get serious about sending emails here and there and whatever else I feel like doing at the time lol.
...anways I just wanted to add my opinion about the Mytouch its not bad at all. I've had is about a week now I believe and like my curve I CAN'T PUT IT DOWN!!! =]Tweet me =]: http://twitter.com/uniquemamii88

Currently loving my PEARL 8100 - 08-16-2009, 08:04 PM #12
in a round-about way, it does sync with outlook.
google's gmail can upload your contacts, and the google calendar syncs with outlook daily and uploads into your google device.
I love the magic. the GPS is better, 3g is better, it's faster, and the app store has an abundance of apps I would use- and do! I use it mostly for maps, sherpa, places directory, weather, music, news feeds, and my all-around fun stuff/directory/etc.
I also love my 8900. I use it for email, work stuff, facebook, myspace, YIM, BBM, and my all-around communications.
can't go wrong with both at your fingertips!Last edited by solace.discord; 08-16-2009 at 08:08 PM.

waiting for a new BlackBerry that satisfies- c'mon RIM!! - 09-04-2009, 12:31 PM #15
Yeah, I do this already for Outlook on my work laptop (amazing I can install the Google Sync app on it, but I can't get BB Desktop Manager).
Android is tempting...not sure why. Maybe it's the curious nerd in me, but I want to give it a spin. If the Sholes wows me, I might convert. - 09-08-2009, 12:56 PM #17
I just hope Android goes to VZW. Then I might open a 2nd line for a personal line and keep work and person separate.

I'm just hoping for Android OS phone for VZW soon. I played with the mytoych3g and I liked it a lot. Very smooth. Only downside is that its on tmo.

They need to put Android on BB.

Or maybe have different options of OS to work with BB. Kinda like when Palm used to offer Palm OS or Winmo back when the Treo series.
