Default android now threatening DoD competition?

Pentagon is now allowing a version of android with DoD clearances. This is previously an industry dominated by RIM, just another area of slippage.

The article says ONLY Blackberrys and Dell Streaks allowed.

It also says its a setback for iPhones. So its either a Huge Dell Streak or Blackberry. I don't see how this is a setback.

If anyone expected RIM to be the standard security cleared device for 100 years they were just dreaming.

Other's will slowly gain access. Which means the RIM has to compete and raise their game.

i would say it is a bit of a setback. playbook os still rough around the edges and needs polishing still. i hope rim gets themselves all settled and fixed before another lost opportunity. just got my playbook yesterday and enjoying it, cant wait for os2 to be finalized.

This is nothing new.
For the last couple of years there have been heavily sandboxed instances of iOS and Android. It is well known that DoD has used Android and iOS in certain programs.
As Sam noted, it was to be expected that other platforms would eventually be allowed in. Under tight security and control. If anyone expects that they can bring their rooted Android devices into the Pentagon they will be sadly disappointed. As they would be if they expect that they can keep diingleberried PBs.

Oh, interesting piece right next to it. Seems there is one Android platform tablet which is doing so badly that Dell is no longer offering it on its website....didn't even hear about this one.

Katie - I am amazed how interested you are in Blackberry. I would say you are more OCD about it than I am!!!

Obsessive, yes ... but more like Booth was obsessed with Lincoln.

Don't know how it is slippage since there has been nothing but another player added perhaps. How is that slippage? Not like they went backwards or have been kicked out of the club.

The levy is broken. There will be more android devices once Google has fully digested Motorola. Motorola and DoD go way back. Watch in the next few years.

The problem with android is EACH version of the OS on EACH device must be approved. The ONLY approved device at the moment is a Dell Streak. Also the Good Mobile server must be installed (its a horrid attempt to copy BES). iOS is allowed (for testing purposes only at the moment) and the same with Android. Windows Mobile has been allowed for MANY years as well. (Not Windows Phone 7, WinMo 6.5). This is nothing new for RIM, but does make their push to BB Fusion more sensible yes? lol RIM knew this was coming before DoD put out the guidance on it, trust me on that.

It is an interesting development, but I don't think RIM needs to be too worried. And yes, Fusion may be a great answer to any incursion.

RIM needs to be very worried IMO. When anyone thinks of RIM they think corporate use and security. These are RIM's strongholds. If companies are beginning to show interest in the other players, then it clearly means they now have more than casual competition in the business sector as well, and we all know how well RIM responds to competition.
