Default $40 Android Tablet

$40 Tablet launched in India. I always knew this open source Android thing will bite a lot of people in their backsides. This is what differentiates RIM and Apple from others. They have control on their OSs. I don't know but this has fail written all over. Something like Indian $3000 Small Car Experiment. Very few takers for that.
The tablet specs are very low end, but it's still running Android. India launches Aakash, world's cheapest tablet computer - Hindustan Times
Quote:
It was about a year ago that KapilSibal had proudly showcased the $35 tablet, Sakshat. And today, an upgrade of the same is finally being made available to the public, christened as Aakash, and it will be the cheapest high-level computing device ever launched in the world.

The tablet has been

manufactured by Datawind of Hyderabad and runs on Android 2.2 Froyo. Here are the specifications of the revolutionary tablet.

Operating System:* Android 2.2 Froyo
Processor: 366MHz
Display: 7-inch resistive
Dimensions: 190.5x118.5x15.7mm
Market:GetJar (not Android Marketplace)
Connectivity:WiFi, 2* USB 2.0 ports. No 3G
Memory: 256MB RAM
Storage: 2GB (with expandable 32GB Micro SD)
Battery: 2100mAh. Translates to about 3 hours of regular use.
Price:Rs 2,276 (Rs 1,500 for students)

Yes, it is true that the spec sheet of the tablet is not top notch. But it is also important to note that the tablet is not really targeted at the middle and higher echelon of the society. But rather to those who can't even afford a mobile phone that will effectively get them connected to the Internet. And for them, this tablet shall be a boon.

My only concern, where and how will the tablet owners get the WiFi to access the Internet? Is donating the food any good if the beneficiary doesn't even know how to cook?

A 366 MHz processor??? That's what I had in my Windows 98 PC!

That tablet would only be good for occasional web browsing.

Don't throw your noses up at this. It is geared towards a population that might not have have an opportunity to have one otherwise. In this light, it is far from a novelty item.

Big ups to the Indian Government for bringing this to fruition.

I'd buy one for $20.
Why would this fall, yet everyone predicts the Amazon fire will sell like hotcakes because of it's low price?

366 mhz, with resistive display of 7'' and 3hrs power. Hmm, I wonder what will be it used mainly for. Also without android market I wonder who the target customers are.

The specs are lesser than that of a two year old HTC running Android 2.2. Three hours battery life and a resistive screen makes this a miss for those who have money.
The poor students who can barely afford two square meals have no access to WiFi or phone lines for that matter. The budget device will be useless for this.
