$40 Android Tablet
$40 Tablet launched in India. I always knew this open source Android thing will bite a lot of people in their backsides. This is what differentiates RIM and Apple from others. They have control on their OSs. I don't know but this has fail written all over. Something like Indian $3000 Small Car Experiment. Very few takers for that.
The tablet specs are very low end, but it's still running Android. India launches Aakash, world's cheapest tablet computer - Hindustan Times Quote:
It was about a year ago that KapilSibal had proudly showcased the $35 tablet, Sakshat. And today, an upgrade of the same is finally being made available to the public, christened as Aakash, and it will be the cheapest high-level computing device ever launched in the world.
The tablet has been
manufactured by Datawind of Hyderabad and runs on Android 2.2 Froyo. Here are the specifications of the revolutionary tablet.
Operating System:* Android 2.2 Froyo
Processor: 366MHz
Display: 7-inch resistive
Dimensions: 190.5x118.5x15.7mm
Market:GetJar (not Android Marketplace)
Connectivity:WiFi, 2* USB 2.0 ports. No 3G
Memory: 256MB RAM
Storage: 2GB (with expandable 32GB Micro SD)
Battery: 2100mAh. Translates to about 3 hours of regular use.
Price:Rs 2,276 (Rs 1,500 for students)
Yes, it is true that the spec sheet of the tablet is not top notch. But it is also important to note that the tablet is not really targeted at the middle and higher echelon of the society. But rather to those who can't even afford a mobile phone that will effectively get them connected to the Internet. And for them, this tablet shall be a boon.
My only concern, where and how will the tablet owners get the WiFi to access the Internet? Is donating the food any good if the beneficiary doesn't even know how to cook?
