So, there I am, playing today's edition of Christmas Angry Birds, minding my own business, when a big window pops up on my X saying "version 2.3 is available and it will take a long time to download and may reboot your phone and do lots of other stuff". Like that. At first, I thought it was a pretty big update for Angry Birds, because there was NO identification on the window about WHAT was going to be updated. It took a few seconds of pre-first cup of coffee thinking to realize that this was an ANDROID update, not Angry Birds.

I think the Android team needs to do a little better than this. At least there should some SOMETHING in this alert that says it's for the phone's OS, and isn't just some spurious spam or virus or something.

Anyway, the phone is working fine with 2.3, not that it was a slug with 2.2.

Don't confuse this with 2.3 Gingerbread. Your phone is still on 2.2 froyo, the build number 2.3.340 which I believe is the latest.

Forgive me for asking, I don't own a droid device. I'm very curious and have seriously considered getting one. What is the difference between 2.3 and 2.3Gingerbread? Thanks.

Ah, quite so. It's actually 2.3.340.MB810.Verizon.en.US. That's the "System Version", whatever that means. The Moto layer beneath Android, perhaps? The Android version is still 2.2.1.

That's kind of confusing, isn't it? Obviously, to ME it is.

2.3 Gingbread is the latest update to the Android OS. The main differences between this and 2.2 Froyo is more optimization and a refreshed UI.

The Droid x is still running Froyo and the specific build number to that device is 2.3.340. This is confusing to some because the numbers are similar.

I'm presently on AT&T and understand they may be releasing a Droid device the Motorola Olympus that is supposed to have the 2.3 Gingerbread. Thank you for the answer.

Its kind of like OS for BB. For example, Storm9550 OS is 5.0.0.1015 but platform is 4.2.0.442. Gingerbread is 2.3 (OS 5.0.0.1015 compared to BB) and build number 2.3.340 (Platform 4.2.0.442 for BB).

And to remove even more confusion, the only "Droids" are specific Motorola Android devices on only one carrier, Verizon Wireless. Verizon Wireless is paying a licensing fee to Lucas for the rights to the Droid moniker. So not all Android devices are "Droids".
