So what android apps are people getting to approximate some link features, especially remote access to desktop files (read&write) via wifi &/or OTA ? On my old HP Pre3 there was a "Samba server" which was klunky but worked... is there a better alternative I might like? I am NOT asking for actually RUNNING the desktop or windows apps, but just accessing the file system bidirectionally...

All my files worth sharing between devices are on a NAS, which runs a FTP server coupled to a dynamic DNS. So if I want something, I use ES File Explorer + FTP regardless if I'm on the local network or a remote one.

Although, I haven't tried to access the phone from a remote network with a similar method, since I usually shove it in Dropbox if it's that important.

I used a Linux-based NAS, so it's different than setting it up on a regular PC. For a Windows hosted FTP server, try Filezilla: http://www.howtogeek.com/140352/how-...ith-filezilla/

Dynamic DNS depends on your router. As for a dynamic DNS provider, freedns.afraid.org is great and free.

I am a little shaky at this stuff. I already have a ip set up via a service no-ip.com & working on a security camera DVR but am currently trying to set up a second different DVR at a different location. It's a Digital Watchdog vMaxxFlex & having trouble with that since Comcast now forces an IPv6 ==> headache...ports don't want to open despite entering correct stuff. Sure hope the FTP goes more smoothly...
