hung/stuck sideloaded apps after 2.0.1 update
This is a bad news for people like me who were getting cozy with playbook+sideloaded apps. Since the last update 2.0.1, I am seeing major problems with the sideloaded apps. It was running super just after the update, but since then everything has been downhill.
- Evernote froze during sync
- RepliGo stuck after pressing Save
- Economist wouldn't open
Once any of these happen, the only option is to restart the PB. What a bummer ...
Did any of you face similar problems? Did anyone came up with a solution e.g. rolling back to the earlier version? - 04-23-2012, 09:56 AM #2
Exactly the same problem. I am not using the above said apps, but my tweetcaster and friendcaster and freezing once per half an hour. It just freezes there and never recover.
It's really getting frustrating and I'm considering to downgrade... - 04-23-2012, 04:19 PM

Of all the above said apps I use RepliGo the most. I have found out that if I start RepliGo first and then switch to the desired app, things are slightly improved.

There definitely needs to be some sort of task manager to kill android player when apps hang...so that way we dont have to reboot the PB all the time. Grrrrrrrrr........
In the meantime, someone made a post bout doing this: run a gameloft game to use up as much RAM as possible and android player will autoclose when not enough RAM. Then exit game and should be good. I tried this and it indeed does work. - 04-24-2012, 02:55 AM

The poster wurstsalat figured it out, and jiatern up above posted the .bar (after he made the post up there) -- the solution is to downgrade to the runtime app that was on 2.0.0, which it turns out is a piece of cake. Download the sys.android.bar file below, install it like any sideload via DPPB or BBH Tools, reboot once or twice, and you are back to the same Android sideload experience you had on 2.0.0.

The older version (android player 2.0.0.56 in OS 2.0.0.7971) works just well and never freeze like what happened to the latest one. I downgraded to 2.0.0.56 and using it happily the whole day.

Yes you are right, the OS will stay as 2.0.1.358 but the android player will be downgraded. You can see the android player version by opening an android app, then press the return arrow to close that app to reveal the Recent Applications page. At the bottom there it shows the version.

For anyone that has done this downgrade, I noticed something a bit annoying. I get a prompt(after doing downgrade) in top right now which says "application update". Its 44MB in size(same size as android player) and its version 2.0.1.358, wonder if its trying to upgrade android player to newest version =(. It doesnt say anything bout android player though, I just suspect thats what its gettin at.
I already have 2.0.1.358 installed as an OS. This isnt a patch to the OS is it?(if it was Id suspect a version number change rofl) - 04-25-2012, 11:33 AM #12
Definitely have 2 camps here. Player always crashed before the updated and doesn't now. And the player never crashed before and does now. Nothing consistent about this thing along with the browser is faster than before and the browser is slower than before now.
It's like there are 2 different playbook and 2 different OS's for them.Sent from me using my fingers. Be pantless in 5K. Febreze - for more than smells.

typical for RIM to mess up the one thing they had going for themselves... I use Fliqnotes, Dropbox, Amazon, Mint...they all freeze now. These morons at RIM can'r get anything right and that's why people are leaving them. Really loved my Playbook with the sideloaded apps. Let's face it, without sideloading apps we actually want/need, the PB has no apps. (angry Birds doesn't count, and neither does the Crackberry app...sorry)

I have all the apps I want beside an IM app that doesn't time out. But then I'm easily pleased and amused.

You are correct, sir. I received the same notification a couple of days ago, and I suspected the same. I finally bit the bullet and did the "upgrade," and yup, the Runtime player has been updated back to the newer version. Back to sideloading the older sys.android.bar again -- and I'll have to ignore the future notifications that are sure to come. It would be wonderful if someone knew how to get rid of the notification icon.
So since you don't do sideloads, you are just here in the sideloading forum running up your post count, eh?
I really only have one "must have" sideload -- the NY Times app. I use it every morning to read the paper. The Kindle app is the only other sideload I really ever use.BB 950,BB 6280,BB 7290,BB 8800,BB 9000,BB 9800,BB 9810, Samsung Galaxy Note II (yes, mine is bigger than yours)

I am not an app addict. That is one of the reason I am okay with Playbook. If the Android apps do not work properly, it is not RIM's fault, well directly. However it is indicative of RIM not doing enough on the app front.
I seriously believe that PB has amazing hardware, but you need Software to get something out of it. That is where sideloading helps. It keeps us with RIM. I just hope that RIM doesn't take steps to stop/discourage people from sideloading.
I use Evernote on Android, even if it is available as PB native app, and it is abysmal junk.
BTW my favorite sideloaded app is ReliGo

Android app player freezes
I am facing the same issue. Few of the sideloaded apps are getting stuck and not able to recover by any means. It was happening before the last OS upgrade and continuing now also. We definitely need some task manager/killer in lines of android.

Guys, great work. I downgraded the Android runtime app and things were looking good in the beginning. However, the runtime app started crashing anytime I switched back to native apps. It was too much for me. So, I downloaded the new Android runtime app. Now I will have to use android apps as they are precious clothes .... what a pain
