Go here: Verizon Wireless Completes Purchase Of Alltel; Creates Nation’s Largest Wireless Carrier
The areas that are being divested to other companies are listed there... now the recent news is that AT&T is buying most of those areas. I have not seen a specific list of which areas they are getting yet.

Danville VA MSA (CMA 262): Pittsylvania, Danville City
VA RSA 1 (CMA 681): Buchanan, Dickenson, Lee, Russell, Wise, Norton City
VA RSA 8 (CMA 688): Amelia, Brunswick, Lunenberg, Mecklenburg, Nottoway
| Those are the only areas in VA that will not become Verizon. I have yet to see if those areas will be part of what AT&T has purchased or not.

Posted from my CrackBerry at wapforums.crackberry.com | When it happens, you should have an option of getting out of the At&T contract and going to whichever carrier you want. Unfortunately, you cannot port to VZW now. They wont allow it.
I'm from Roanoke, Va. At&T is horrible there and when I left in october 08 they still werent 3g. I think though, US Cellular or Sprint might buy up those VA markets. AT&T is apparently buying the midwestern divested markets.

AT&T Inc. is buying the assets of Verizon Wireless in 79 mainly rural areas for $2.35 billion.
Verizon Wireless is forced to sell the service areas, which are spread over 18 states, to satisfy regulatory conditions of its purchase of Alltel Corp. The areas are mainly Alltel territories that overlap with Verizon's own coverage.
AT&T is getting spectrum licenses, cell towers and 1.5 million subscribers in the deal, the companies said late Friday. Since AT&T phones aren't compatible with Alltel or Verizon phones, these subscribers will need new phones to use AT&T's network.
The states with areas included in the deal are Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia and Wyoming.

I live in a divested market in NW Ohio, and I don't see Ohio listed above. Anyone heard any rumors as to what will happen to the markets not being bought by AT&T? I'm kind of jealous, AT&T is supposed to be getting a new blackberry I've been drooling over!!

Now I have to decide if I should become an AT&T customer or let my contract expire at the end of the year and switch to Verizon

Will Alltel customers being taken over by ATT be able to buy a new phone for cheap since there will be new contracts and GSM? When Verizon took over unicel here people got new phones for cheap so I was wondering if that would be the same thing to happen with ATT.
