VZW to cut 8,000 jobs

I wonder if all 8,000 are Alltel employees

I was in a former Alltel, now VZW store recently. Many of the reps working there were former Alltel now VZW employees. They do not know if they will be retained. If retained, they do not know if they will be transferred. Their biz cards have no address on them. This store is already understaffed. Sales reps are being treated just as badly as some Alltel/VZW customers.

This should come as no surprise to anyone. With a merger of this size there is bound to be a bit of overlap in certain areas resulting in a need to "trim the fat" so to speak. In todays economy companies need to run as lean as possible to turn a profit. I somehow doubt these first 8000 will be the final cut. We (customers and employees) will all suffer on some level with this merger, hopefully it will just be short term and not a long and agonizing...

Not surprising as GRANDPA DAN pointed out. This is the climate of corporate America. I heard some rumblings but I dont think it's as many as 8,000.

Just read article in WSJ. The wireline segment will probably feel the brunt of the job cuts as that business is declining while the wireless area continues to grow.

VZW also announced huge earrings.

This is Verizon Communications, not Verizon Wireless.

Profit actually fell 21% as wireless gained but business spending waned. Profit was $1.48 billion, down from $1.88 billion a year ago.

Yes on Verizon Communications their profits fell 21%

They said they were going to cut 8,000 jobs in the Wireline division.

So this will have near no impact on their wireless employee's as that division is growing and standing strong.

Vzw is doing a ton of hiring here.. Some executives and such did not make the cut as well as others like IT, but most got job offers or moved to a different dept in the company.

And yes - the loss of jobs would come from verizon communications.

By the way - why does making record profits hurt feelings? It is business and the goal is to make as much profit as possible.

VZW is continuing to hire at a serious pace.. We are continuing to grow strongly..

As someone mentioned, this is Verizon Communications, which is landline, FIOS, DSL, etc..
