verizon blackberry phone on alltel plan?

I am wondering if you buy a verizon blackberry phone if you can get it activated on an alltel plan?

Check out the first post in the "storm working on alltel" thread. It has the steps for getting a Storm to work. It should, hypothetically, work on other phones as well but it's untested.

Just called 3 local stores and they will not activate a vzw BB on an alltel plan. They said I could do it after july 11 but I would then have to change to a vzw plan.

I have been curious about this also as I shatered my 8330 last night and can only find used vzw BB's for sale locally.

I know they can be hacked, but I have tried stuff like that in the past with bad results. Also found out the stores stopped doing insurance claims in store as well. Sucks being with out a phone right now trying to sort this all out.

that is a crock! they want you to change to a verizon plan but you do not have to. if you already have a verizon phone you CAN activate the phone on alltel if you have a verizon phone and an agent WILLING to add the esn. if not you can always wait till after the transition and add it via the online service and all the data should work by then.

They all claim I can activate a non smart phone and keep my plan after july, but smartphones are the problem with the new system they claim.

Wouldn't they know? I'm real interested in this due to the fact that I don't want to be stuck with the alltel 8330 forever. Guess I will have to if it means keeping my plan at a rate I am comfortable price though. Not bitching, just trying to get a solid answer.

Incorrect. You can "technically" add a Verizon phone to an alltel account - but most won't because it is against policy for various reasons.

Verizon's system will know if it is a Verizon device and will force you to change the rate plan to a VZW plan. The primary reason for all of this is the features and services do not match what is on the Alltel plan nor does the PRL in the phone match the roaming agreements if it is on the Alltel rate plan.

Data will not be up and running for some time. Probably around late fall when that will transition over officially.

my bad! i did not mean to give bad information but, i did have a storm added to my alltel account. i did have to do work to get the data to work but decided to sell the phone. So, Help me understand this, im paying verizon (July 11th switchover) but i cannot use the network unless i change my rate plan?

Pretty much correct, unless you do the legwork of doing it the way you did your storm.

I get more pissed by the day with this merger/buyout or whatever it is.
