Has AT&T taken over Alltell or is there something else going on?

I would love to upgrade to the Torch but the plans are quite a bit higher. I understand we will be grandfathered in on the unlimited data plans as long as we don't pay for an upgrade or switch plans. Alltel was quite a bit cheaper. I am not too sure on the HTC's.
I too would like a Torch, but not sure if it is a feasible upgrade. The Tour I am using now is okay and since it can take a SIM card I've wondering about unlocking it and just seeing if I can get an AT&T SIM card, then keep the Tour.

Info here: About the Mergers

Verizon could not take over some markets when they bought Alltel, so these markets are now being taken over by AT&T.

From what I understand Georgia will be the only state with Alltel. GA bought Alltel with Chad and all, so there will be no use for Alltel phones. My Bold also has a SIM card slot but I cannot find anything at all on unlocking them. If you find something please let me know. The new Blackberry they offer is the 9300 Curve 3g. But the camera is a 2.0 with NO flash and the memory is quite smaller than my Bold. I like my Bold like I said but have only had it since August.

I can't believe that Alltel is still selling Alltel phones knowing they will only be paper weights in a couple months. I love my Bold and hate to downgrade. I wish there was some way to keep my phone.

You know what's really dumb? I live in group 1 that has a cutoff date of Nov. 1st, but today they released the Desire and the Wildfire. ****, should I buy one and use if for a week?

Has anybody heard as to when AT&T is applying their equipment in place of Alltel, is it 2G(EDGE) or 3G? I imagine it is a population biased decision but I am hopeful to get 3G in rural Montana. Probably wishfull thinking!

Alltel is also maintaining individuality in the Cleveland region of Ohio, where AT&T already has a very strong presence, and a few other areas of the US. I didn't memorize the map. There will be places where AT&T is taking over sections of the Alltel network where there is no GSM coverage; only CDMA, and users will have the option of enlisting with Sprint or Verizon instead of AT&T if they so desire.

Most of the free phones are the Pantech Link (?) and the Pantech Laser. Best part is, no contract, so you can still upgrade and get whatever phone you want, and keep the Pantech phones to use as backups, or to activate additional lines with no contract... since you already own the phones and all.

Just keep in mind, the coverage maps for AT&T are mathematical representations of expected coverage. Inquire with local AT&T users about their actual service in the area to get the best measure of service quality. For the record, except for areas just outside of Columbus and around Orwell, and a small spot near Andover, I have great coverage all across Ohio. Western PA, most of WV, and southern NY are good for me too.

. AT&T is only putting in 3G networks in the areas they purchased from Alltel.

Smile Good News

I just found out last week that they have added new upgrades for the replacement phones. I have the Bold 9650 and the original upgrade was a Curve 3g which was a downgrade. And now YAY YAY YAY! They have added the Torch or the Samsung Captivate. Very nice upgrades. I love my BB and am so excited for the Torch but I think I am liking that Captivate. This was a nice surprise! So if you have the higher end BB (Bold, Tour etc) you can now upgrade to the Torch or Samsung Captivate (At&T's best Android) Berryfun
