| | Made my decision (mostly), returning already
Last month I upgraded my Alltel account from a regular family one to a smartphone + 1 line plan. I picked up the pearl flip. That phone had a software malfunction so by the advice of the sales associate I got a Curve instead. It was good but then I started having serious doubts if I actually needed the phone. So after a HUGE hassle which involved some 10+ calls to 611 and 4 visits to the local store and speaking with the manager, I got out of this "new" contract because I was in my 30 day trial and put back on my old plan.
Since then I have been sorely missing the whole blackberry experience. So I thought and thought and thought some more... did I want to wait for the Verizon switch then upgrade? Or did I want to lock myself into a cheaper Alltel plan for atleast the next 2 years? I want the cheaper plan!
I went to the local store and picked up a BB Pearl. I get it home and everything works except email. Page says my account has been suspended, but that's not of utmost importance since I use the phone for mommy goodness and leisure. The problem is the memory on this phone. I have 1 ap installed and it was quoting me at only have 8 MB of space. Holy geez! This thing's supposed to have 64! I mean the curve I had had some 60+ (allbeit it's internal mem is 90+ but still) with about 10 aps and several themes. I also followed tips on these forums to maximize my memory to no avail.
Now I'm thinking I should just go back to the Curve. I've got to go into the store anyway today to get them to fix the email problem. I still have the Curve accessories I bought. And I'm guaranteed more memory on it....
After this whole ordeal, any personal opinions on what you think I may do? I know it was long to read but either way I'm sticking to BB this time.

I also started with the pearl at alltel in September . Because of all the useful information from this site I upgraded to the curve in November. I am soo happy I moved from the pearl to the curve. I think the curve is great choice!!!

Agreed, Curve it is. I have no problems with the pearl for the most part minus the whole internal memory thing. I kinda prefer it's typing method but I became accustomed to the curve. To Curve we go! Happily!

The pearl is known to not have as much as memory. The memory issue is very common with the pearls. I would either go back to the Curve or the Pearl Flip. Perhaps you had one bad pearl flip; I used it and to be entirely honest, of every BB, I found it to be the best one. (I base that on ease of use, glitches, memory, etc).
The pearl flip has more memory than both the regular pearl and the curve. So I guess it depends on which layout you like better, but for a lot of fun apps; I'd get something with more memory.

Pearl has about 20mb of total memory available once you factor out the OS, etc, out of the box. Depending on what you have installed, and what's int he current software package, that could be less.
In terms of memory it goes:
Pearl
Curve
Pearl Flip (Pearl Flip has 128mb which is more than the Curve)
I have all 3 (wife has a pink Pearl, I own a Curve and Pearl Flip although I'm not currently using a BB right now).

I just got a pearl. I would have gone with the curve but i don't like the wide qwerty key pad. I love the suretype.
I thought memory was going to be an issue too but i have facebook, myspace, slacker radio, poynt, a new theme, bb messenger, and brick breaker all downloaded. not to mention 2 email accounts set up.
i'm good for now. i bought the phone off ebay. i'm not due for an upgrade until december and by then my area will be verizon. I'm going to get the storm 2 if it's out by then.

Make sure you get a MicroSD card, and you save anything the phone will let you to that.
The phone's designed to delete non-permanent content if the memory runs low (SMS/MMS, call logs, etc). So if you fill up your memory that stuff gets dumped w/o your OK.

I make sure to delete emails as soon as I get them & then I delete texts messages every night before bed. I have a 1Gb card, mainly because I had it for my 8600. I would like a bigger capacity card, but it's not a must for me right now.

Wait for the Verizon switch-over to be official (mid-July and everything Alltel becomes Verizon and Alltel disappears). By then they will hopefully be merging the networks and then shortly there-after you can get the Tour. Or get the Curve now. Anything but the Pearl.

I upgraded through Alltel Saturday. Got a curve, also got my husband a bb.
I'm not too terribly interested in the Tour or Storm 2 so I guess I have that much going for me.
I also found out what was wrong with the email. It was an account issue which took about an hour to sort out but it's done now.
As it stands, I couldn't be happier with my Curve. I even bought a theme from CB store! Before I was leery to fully commit to the BB cause but I'm feeling up to the challenge now. |

Yeah,
The first BB is great. I just recently stopped using my Berry's and switched to an HTC Touch Pro (just cause I wanted to try out WinMo 6.5 which is actually quite fun) but the Berry is a GREAT device. I still have all mine in a drawer so I can switch back and forth (I'm a phone junkee).

Wow, you have some serious persuasion skills or a very good group of reps at your local Alltel store. They would have been throwing stuff at me for all the switching back and forth.
