Default How to tether your 8130/8830/8703/7130 on Vista (Alltel)

After searching for days and being on hold for nearly an hour the tech guy gave me the address to a website:

alltelrim.quicklinkmobile.com

I got to run but I'll post later soon as I get it to work. Remember this is for Vista and Alltel.

to use any BB as modem you need the desktop software installed, open and connected, setup dial up connection to carrier and may need an initialization string in modem properties in advanced tab. check with carrier for details as well

There are no clear instructions for Alltel and -Vista-. Notice what forum your posting in this is the Alltel forum.

I had to redo some installation steps. I first installed the Alltel software then the blackberry desktop. Once that was installed I setup a DUN with the #777 number and it started working. The alltel program seems to have a bug in it so I can't use it directly or solo. But doing what I have has worked.

With Vista Ultimate version with SP1 - my laptop recognized my BB8830 as a modem , and I could set it up, dial and it worked.

Now you can get the software via Alltel Downloads - you can in fact download the Quicklink mobile application for every phone Alltel offers that's capable of tethering...but do be sure to add the tethering feature to your plan or be prepared to get hit with huge bills for data use on non-smart phones.

I just set my 8830 up as a tethered modem with the Blackberry Desktop Software showing connected and the DUN method dialing #777, username is (your phone number)@alltel.net, password is alltel.

.My question is will I incur addit data charges outside of my smartchoice plan since I never had Alltel add the tethering service code to my account?

Thanks

Make sure you have BBDesktop manager running. Also make sure BB DM shows connected with your PIN. Finally in the DUN settings make sure only the 'standard modem' is selected.
Have fun.

I have done it both ways.. with the quiklink program and without..

Without- Just plug in your phone open DM and set up a new dial up connection. use #777 as the phone number and leave username and password BLANK..

Just a heads up, due to people doing dishonest things, data tethering has been increased to $30. Thanks to all who have used this feature without paying. When an audit is done I hope you get more than just suspended data.
Don't worry those who are already paying for it, you will not have to pay more. Just don't cancel it as the new rate will apply when you put it back. And thank you for playing by the rules.

Huh? I had a rep tell me point blank that I don't need to pay for tethering since I already have unlimited data. Maybe it's alltel which should play by more reasonable rules, like not charging customers for internet twice.
