Default Data Plan

So to have a Blackberry on an Alltel plan you have to have a data plan?

That would be correct. Alltel has a contract with RIM when they sell their devices, they must be activated with a data plan.

A blackberry without a data plan is like car with no tires.

The whole point of a blackberry is it's data capabilities.

And, as has been noted, a data feature is required to have a bb on Alltel.

I believe all providers will require a data plan if you purchase a smart phone. You could get around it on a GSM network by purchasing the smart phone online at full retail, and then sliding in your SIM card.

Not the best idea though, because you'd probably get nailed for the data use. If I were you I'd just get the data plan and save yourself the hassle of a huge bill.

My wife wanted a good quality phone that she could talk and text on. That's all she wanted to do.

I got her an AT&T Curve off Ebay, unlocked it, and put a prepaid GSM sim card in it from a local carrier. She loves the keyboard and how easy it is to text with.

Yes, the phone will do more than she's using, but its a great phone for the two things she does use it for.

Its more like driving a pickup to go get a gallon of milk. Yes, its more vehicle than the job requires, but it gets the job done just fine.

If you claim you want a BB with no data, what you are really saying is that you want to lug around a huge phone that you can't use to its full extent and just want the status symbol of carrying a bb.

Tons of phones can call and text just fine.
