Default Curve still worth it

I'm contemplating on making the dive into the smartphone world and was just wondering if the 8330 would still be worth my time? I could wait for Verizon to take over, god know when that will be, and get a Tour, along with a higher bill ($4 or $5 more) or sign up and get a 8330, a cheaper plan and what I assume is actual unlimited data. My only concern is that the Curve 8330 will be practically ancient if I sign a two year deal, won't it? I'd sign a one year deal but I'm not sure what the phone would cost if I did that.

Do you think the 8330 will be relevant in 2 years or should I just wait for the Tour from Verizon?

As with a lot of new devices, there are a lot of folks that are not happy with the Tour, build quality being the biggest complaint I have read about. Also, there are often bugs that need to be worked of a new device. I would go to the Tour threads and read what the users are saying about the product. I bought by Curve last November, knowing that I could "hit the ground running" with my new device. There are a lot of great things to say about the Curve 83XX products, but they are getting a little long in the tooth. It is still a great, dependable product and I plan on keeping mine until 4Q 2010 when another newer but proven and reliable product is available.

My Curve 8330 was purchased a year ago. It has been a reliable workhorse, with no problems at all. When our market makes the switch to Verizon, I have no intentions of getting a Tour. I may opt out to upgrade to the Storm 2 when it is released by Verizon, but if I don't like it, I will go back to the Curve.

Thanks for your input... I tend to be one of those nerds that crave a new gadget almost way to often lol, and I prefer the latest and greatest as most do, but I do know the 8330 is a rock solid device as well. My other thought was to switch to sprint but so many of my friends are with alltel it would end up being more expensive in the long run. I may just go with the curve on a one year deal.

Anyone have any idea on how nice Alltel's retention dept. is? I remember when I left Tmobile they practically tried to give me the world!

I just got my Curve a month ago and couldn't be happier with it. I'm not a big fan of the touch phones and was more than happy to ditch my WM touch phone, so the Storm didn't attract me at all. I love my Curve so much that the Tour doesn't even tempt me yet. Like others have said, maybe when the kinks are worked out but who knows? Not a fan of the keyboard on it as compared to my Curve.

I've had my Curve for about a year. I've switched into various phones since I got it (BB Pearl/Pearl Flip, Treo Pro, HTC Touch Pro) and ended up back at my faithful Curve.

I plan to get the Tour, but mainly because I'm a junkee for everything electronic. That and the Rev A (I tether a lot).

I do though highly recommend the Curve. I've had mine for about a year now and it's still kickin' strong.

Honestly I would say wait until the merger is complete in your area and get the Tour. I too have Alltel and was fortunate that the Verizon/Alltel transition took place in my market on July 10, making it possible for me to upgrade to the Tour as soon as it was released although I didn't get around to it until the following Sunday. I was able to keep my Alltel plan and upgrade to the Tour so that was a definite plus for me. I came from the Alltel 8330 so I think I can answer most questions you may have comparing the two. I purchased the Curve on May 1, 2008, the day Alltel released it so I dealt with some initial issues with it as well. The Tour is obviously the next generation Blackberry so along with that comes 2.5 times the memory, a much higher resolution screen, bigger battery (although that doesn't really translate to longer battery life), faster processor, updated OS and a host of other improvements. I would advise you just go into a Verizon store in your area and compare the two devices side by side. And as far as the problems people are having, I think many they are greatly exaggerated. The only area where I think Blackberry dropped the ball was the battery door as their is slight play in mine but after using a small piece of insulation from my extra curve battery door I was able to solve that. If you have any particular questions comparing the two devices, feel free to reach out to and I will be glad to assist you.

hrmm decisions decisions. I'm not sure what I'll do, I would like the phone now but kinda have the same sentiment as JR Rider, in that I would rather have the next gen BB. I may just go with a one year plan and get the Curve.

The closest Verizon store that I know of is over an hour away so thats out of the question.

Does Alltels retention department cut any deals? That may be the way to go if they do.
