Default Changing number w Alltel requires new agreement/phone with VZW?

I'm moving from northwest Florida to Cincinnati Ohio, an area which has never had AllTel to go to school. Since I won't be getting a landline I figured I would get a new number to save myself from all the roaming. I called cs to get my number changed and was told in order to change my number I would have to purchase a Verizon phone. He didn't state the obvious but I know this means having to sign to Verizon contract. My question is that is this how its going to be any time I need to change anything on my account? I asked people at the store and they said oh no changing the number won't be an issue and I made sure they understood that they area I'm moving never had AllTel. And they insured me I wouldn't be faced with this.

Wow. This is really long winded.

I would just like to say that when AllTel became a part of Verizon I thought I'd be like a Verizon customer and be satisfied like they keep saying I would be but instead I feel like the red-headed step child.

You'll probably get different opinions about this but what about keeping your current number. If you are currently under an Alltel Nation-wide contract but part of the VZW merger, you should be able to use your current number and plan with no roaming charges in your new location. Make sure you have the latest PRL and you should be OK.

If you have a Blackberry on the Alltel network you're able to use the device in any state without roaming charges.

What plan are you on? As long as your NOT on a regional plan you'll be able to keep your number and not have roaming charges.

Go to google voice and set up a new number that will ring your phone when it is dialed. This is in the beta test, but it will simplify your life. Check it out

Well the first people you talked to were incorrect. If your going to a non Alltel area you can't change to a local number there. Since Verizon is in that area they recommend you switch to Verizon.

While you woud be place ok keeping your number if your on a nationwide plan you will have to do prl updates manually or find the nearest Alltel area to you

Its not the roaming part since I don't get charged for that I'm doing it more for the convenience for the people there such as my employer and my professors. Its would be nice if everytime they contacted me it wasn't long distance.
Oh well.
I'm enjoying the run around.
Went to pay my bill asked the rep about my situation and was told. Well changing to a number in that zip code will not be a problem and I wouldn't have to purchase Verizon equipment. Blah

As a remider to the OP and others:

Forum Posting Rules

Use a Descriptive Title
This rule is simple; help us to help you. When you create your thread / post, think of it as if 'somone else' is reading it. With that in mind, make your subject lines related to the content of your post. Having a subject line of 'help' or 'now what', will not really help others later when they do a search for a particular issue. So, try to be a little more creative. Example: “My Pearl will not show myFaves icons” or “How do I use BB Maps on my 8100”

Changing thread titles to make them more descriptive isn't an insult to the OP. A descriptive title makes it easier for people who know the answer to recognize the question. It also helps for the next time, when someone is searching for the answer to the same question. And finally, new users may not always know how to describe their problem. A mod may understand the problem more clearly and change the title to reflect what the problem actually is, rather than the OP's misunderstanding of it.

I didn't think it was an insult...lol. I just found it funny, do you realize how many threads I see titled "help", "simple question", or some other nonsense that go on without being changed? At least 1 a day maybe more. Like I said... Musta been a slow day on the forums.
