Thought I'd share a funny... Just got two pieces of mail today from AT&T... both trying to get me to sign up for a business account with them. (I recently opened a small business.) And yet, if I type in my zip code on the website, I get the "we're sorry, we don't have service in your area" message. LOL

But it's getting closer!

Yeah, when I log into my Alltel account it redirects me to an ATT info page with no obvious links back to my account.

Ditto entering my zip code on the ATT wireless page: "we're sorry..."

Wouldn't really care were it not for my contract expiring next month. What to do, what to do...

you can still upgrade your eligible lines with alltel and then still be able to upgrade with ATT when the conversion is over. Most areas are slated to be converted within the next 6 months.

Thanks! This is good to know. The last piece of the puzzle is when Alltel gets the 9650.

Got the welcome letter from ATT (on Alltel letterhead):

"Nation's fastest 3G network" true, with a caveat or two

"140,000 apps" Nice but how many of those are iphone?

"talk and browse web or email at the same time" True, GSM beats CDMA on that point.

"get a new phone and keep your current phone number, rate & plan" I'll go with that. Not expecting a free Torch or iphone to replace my Tour, though.

No time line is given about the transition (I'm in MT), other than "in the weeks ahead information" will be sent.

Have my doubts about how good signal will be initially. In MT the CDMA network (Alltel + VZW) is the most comprehensive. Friends from out of state complain regularly about the quirky to poor service on their ATT or Tmo phones. Hopefully it will quickly improve over time.

Not wanting to go over to vzw; that would add another $15 to my monthly family plan. Anyone know of prepaid BB service? yeah, riiiight.

The network shouldn't be far off from what Alltel has today. All of the Alltel owned towers in the properties purchased by AT&T are being converted to AT&T's network. In fact Verizon will lose coverage in the next couple of years once the roaming agreement expires.

Can you explain the comment you made about Verizon losing its roaming agreement in the next couple years. I live in a divested county (in NE) where ATT made one of its purchases. I had assumed I would have to become a Verizon customer (now still Alltel) or perhaps be able to pick ATT as my carrier. Are you saying Verizon will not offer service in the divested markets? Thanks.

Runkle, I think what asp was saying is that since Verizon has roaming agreements with Alltel towers, when those towers are switched to GSM, the roaming agreements will be lost, and there will be a loss of service in that area. For example, there is a small town near here that doesn't have a Verizon tower by it at all. Alltel put one up there a few years ago. You can now get calls on both Verizon and Alltel, but the Alltel is definitely a stronger signal. But once that Alltel tower gets converted over, Verizon will no longer be able to use it, and people in that town with Verizon service will again not be able to make calls.

If you're in a divested Alltel market, you will become an ATT customer, not a Verizon customer. Unless you choose to switch carriers to Verizon.

Yeah the FCC mandated that ATT keep the roaming agreements active that Alltel had with verizon and everyone else for 2 yrs after the close date. So in all AT&T owned Alltel markets, Verizon and any other competitor will lose those roaming agreements and coverage in those areas around June of 2012. Within the next 6 months every Alltel customer going to AT&T will already be using the AT&T network.
