Default Alltel won't release my Tour's ESN

So I switched to AT&T a few days ago because I wanted good 3G coverage and an iPhone. Thank God I made the switch, let me tell you. Night and day difference between AT&T and Alltel. Anyways, I called Alltel today because I wanted to give a friend my Tour (he is still on Alltel) and wanted to make sure the ESN was "clean." The first support person told me he could "release" it, then he said he couldn't and transferred me to tech support who also said they could, then told me they cannot release it. When I inquired as to why, I got no info other than "I'm sorry, sir, I cannot release that ESN since the account is closed." This makes no sense because the last two BlackBerry phones I bought were from people who switched providers and had closed accounts, and they were able to have their ESN's cleared and I was able to activate the phone perfectly fine. He basically told me it could never get released. What a damn sham; so my friend cannot even use the phone and this makes zero sense to me. Why was I able to have this done before but not now? I have never been behind in payments, never NOT made a payment or anything of the like. I think it's wonderful I now have a Tour that can't be used by anyone.

Any Alltel techs/support persons have any info on this or can offer me any advice? I'd hate to have this phone to go waste especially when my friend is using that ty LG Scoop still and would love to have this BlackBerry (his first one).

If the acct is in DISC status the ESN should be able to be removed. The only reason they wouldn't be able to change it would be non payment. If you want to get something done it is usually best to go into a store and have them do it for you. Alltel Tech Support has gone way down hill since the majority of Alltel merged with Verizon.

Sometimes if you terminate your contract early and pay the etf they don't allow the esn to be released for a certain period of time? I'm not sure but I think there are several threads that mention that.

Damn that sucks. I guess I'll wait a bit and see if I can get it done at a store.

Perhaps report them to the fcc. But in the complaint form write that you are wanting to sell it, not just give it away. Even just the threat of an FCC complaint seems to really get the companies attention. Anyone else want to chime in?
