| | Alltel to ATT
I'm a little scared about what is going to happen to my service and plan. Right now I am on Alltel with SmartChoice 500. My primary phone is a BB Curve....my wife (second phone) has a Curve for $40 extra and my daughter has a regular phone for $20 extra. I got the letter stating that I will be on ATT one day....it doesn't look like ATT has a plan that is comparable to mine...especially since I've got like 16-17 MyCircle numbers...Anyone got any suggestions/insight?

your plan will stay the same unless you resign a new contract with AT&T.

At least you got a letter. I've not had one communication from Alltel regarding us divested marktet folk. Hardly any Alltel customers in my area know of ATT's purchase. The local store has one poster up that you have to stop to read the fine print.
Your plan will remain the same after the takeover until your contract expires; and then...you're free to choose
For us in MT, it's ATT or big bad red for nationwide 3G data. <Big sigh>

Count on a contract change. Good thing is, it means a free way out.

The only way the contract will alter is if the customer CHOOSES to change their service or upgrade their plan. It is not a way out of the binding contract.

I recommend you port to Verizon, ASAP, AT&T is crap, they cost the same as Verizon, but with crappier coverage, call quality, and customer service.

The thing is, everywhere alltel becomes att, there will most likely be 3g att coverage as they transfer alltel towers to att. I just don't want att because service is expensive. If you're in a city, I would go to sprint for their really good rates.

Will our CDMA phones still work when AT&T takes over? Or will we all be forced into new phones (and new plans) the day of the conversion?

My contract doesn't expire for another year. Once ther merger completes there will be only ATT and Verizon here. It doesn't look like either has a plan that is comparable with what I got. I feel I am going to get screwed in this deal.

And I'm not 100% sure, but I doubt Verizon will let you take your Alltel phone to them even though they're CDMA.
And then contract pricing is a whole other place that you'll have to open up your wallet. Verizon and ATT are definitely more expensive than Alltel.

Now I'm only speculating here, but usually when one carrier purchases another, you are NOT forced immediately to change your existing plan or contract, even if you're not currently under contract. Even when the two companies utilize different technologies the purchasing company will usually give you plenty of time and throw all sorts of incentives your way, especially if/once you're no longer under contract ( obligated to stay with them ). If memory serves me correctly Cingular/AT&T had some TDMA phones running around for a long time before they "forced" people to upgrade by offering a free dumbphone with no contract just to get them off of the old technology. When VZW shut off the analog network they sent out letters months in advance and offered a free phone though that instance was a bit different. So in this case I doubt highly that AT&T will just say to you guys, yea welcome to the family now you gotta buy a new phone.

Alltel to ATT and Curve issues
I am a current Curve user on Alltel (CDMA) who will become a ATT (GSM) user in the next couple months. I know I will be getting a new phone from/for ATT, but I'm a little concerned about making it through the next couple months. My current Curve is starting to have issues - ringer quit a month ago, little roller ball needs replacing - I need to clean under it every few days, and now I can't get email, and email password appears corrupted, so I can't change/delete email settings.
I've tried to reset email settings (unsuccessfully), done multi soft resets, bat removal and still no email. So I could use some help with these issues.
However, I'm thinking about getting a quad-band unit that would work on Alltel now, and then at least be a backup unit, if not primary unit when we move to ATT (and GSM) in a couple three months. So my main question is, can I buy an Xberry today that will work with Alltel and then work with ATT in Feb/Mar when they convert?
thanks, Chuck

thanks, Chuck | AT&T will give you a new phone when your market switches. I am in one of the very first areas that swiched and 3g coverage is excellent. If I switch to GSM only, coverage is horrible. It seems AT&T is not upgrading the GSM portion of the network they bought, only focusing on 3g. If you want, you could buy either a Tour or Bold today, and when your market switches, use is on GSM with your AT&T sim, but most likely your coverage will be less than if you used the replacement 3g handset they will give you (a curve 9300, thought Tour/Bold users will have the option of a Torch). If you are interested in upgrading, I have a Tour I am selling. By upgrading to a Tour now, you have the option of a free Torch when your area switches instead of just a Curve 3g. PM me if interested.
