How is it stealing when you're paying for data? My bill is $164 a month for 2 Blackberries with 500 minutes shared. I should be able to tether all I want for that price, which I do. Please explain how it's stealing when I'm paying Alltel?

Dude, for $164 a month, they can suck it. I've been with Alltel for nearly 8 years, they haven't lost any money on me. Not to mention, I have an unlimited data plan; unlimited means no limits by defintion. So how does it matter if my laptop uses more bandwith? We vary between 4 and 12 GB a month between our 2 phones, and Alltel never charged me extra. They know what I'm doing. If it was a problem, why wouldn't they do something about it? If this "stealing" is such a problem, why haven't they put a stop to it like other carriers have?

You're being ridiculous about this whole thing. I'm only using the services I pay them for, it's not stealing.

Dude, are you the tethering police? Give it a rest. You railroaded a legitimate thread for a legitimate question....let the OP worry about the consequences. I was actually curious on what the answers would be; Alltel specific and beyond what the BB 101 here covers. Jeesh.
Watch your step getting off the horse, it's quite high.

The question is it free has/has not been officially answered. If your tethering and your not getting overages. Why bother argue about if its free or the principles about using the feature? Yes everyone on here is entitled to their own opinion, but it has turned into moreless a morals thread instead of its intended purpose.

1. It's not free on Alltel. You need to have the tethering plan added. On Sprint (mentioned by the OP), a separate plan isn't needed.

2. Your "unlimited" data plan includes unlimited data on the DEVICE not on a computer.

3. It is stealing even if you (or anyone) doesn't think so. And even if you having been caught yet.

4. Do whatever you want, but don't try to justify stealing.

If a police officer pulls you over for speeding and you are driving above the speed limit, try giving the judge the excuse that you've been doing it all along and "they haven't done something about it" before. And see how far that gets you.

So "unlimited data" isn't really unlimited...and tech support if you want to tether is $30 a month. Suppose I never need tech support for my ability to tether, then why shouldn't my "unlimited data" be truely unlimited? I mean honestly what does anyone care if I use 1gb or 1tb of info if I'm paying for the unlimited plan?

It is - for applications and data used ON YOUR PHONE.

Tethering is using data external to the phone. Cell phones are not designed to be a full time, full service internet connection - if your data transfer needs every month are in the gigabyte range, then you need a DSL, cable modem, or dedicated T1 line - not a cell phone as a modem.

Seriously, why would anyone pay alltel $30 a month to tether when you can get dsl for that price? I understand a cell phone is not intended as a full time modem...duh. However if I am somewhere that has no wifi and need to access something via my laptop(I am talking on an occasional basis) why should I pay for tech support I don't need? And fwiw I am fairly certain my bb bandwidth needs exceed the "gigabyte range" on a monthy basis. If we are talking about downloading things to my bb then transferring them to my pc what's the difference if I just download them directly to my pc? Honestly here who cares if someone is paying for tethering(tech support)? I'm not slowing anyones connection with my bandwidth use.

Last time I checked, DSL wasn't portable. I can't use DSL when I travel, at my friend's house, on a boat, etc.

And somehow you are missing a point. You aren't paying for TECH SUPPORT. You are paying for ACCESS.

And of course, you are slowing down someone else's connection if you are tethering. And paying for the services you are using is the way that the carrier is able to support the services through network resources.

And the difference that you are also missing is that the computer will obviously download data in much larger packets at a much greater frequency that a BlackBerry will. You can't compare the two. So using a computer to tether without paying affects more than just the individual user.
